Brown’s Famous Flames period

He was a major influence on a
number of musicians including
Tim Sanders, an Augusta saxo

“As a kid, I loved his playing,
copied his solos and was thrilled
to later meet him on the read in
New York City. He’s the con

and goes down in the annals of
great R&B saxmen.”
Bassist and musical historian
David Heath is another Pinckney
fan. “As a youngster, I knew I
loved the solos on ‘I Feel Good,’

group, “Sinclair” always anchored
the baad and never left the fold.
Raphael Cox of Canton, Ohio is
a longtime Pinckney enthusiast
and fondly recalls a Youngstown,
Ohio concert at Idora Amusement
Park. “Of course we realized
James’ greatness, but ‘Sinclair’
always stood out. And you could
tell he meant a lot to JB’s success
because James usually showcased
his talents.”
Atlanta veteran rapper and poet
“Smoove Daddy Rap” befriended
Pinckney in recent years, and
helped the saxman after he started
getting sick. “Not only was he a
great musician, he was a gentle
man. I'm glad to have known him.
And he always remained faithful
to JB,” said “Smoove,” who also
recited a poem at Pinckney’s fu
neral. “The Godfather” spoke at
the funeralin Atlanta and said “it’s
too bad flowers are bestowed on
friends after they’re gone.”
