Augusta sailor contributes
to Navy’s diversity

tributes to the Navy’s diversity,
animportant characteristic for any
organization. Today’s Navyissuch

help to enhance and further this
characteristic.
At the U.S. Navy Shore Inter
mediate Maintenance Activity
(SIMA) in San Diego, where Rosier
isstationed, sailors of nearly every
race and ethnicity can be found
working together. The Navy cre
ates a work environment full of
cultural experiences, andisaleader
in radical integration.
SIMA San Diego provides qual
ity maintenance, training, and sup
port service to maximize fleet
material readiness.
The Navy celebrates the month
of February as African American/
Black History Month. This cel
ebration is one of many the Navy

tion as valedictorian of the gradu
ating class 0f 1999. Shehasdistin
guished herselfin many areas while
at Davidson including concert and
symphonicband, the yearbook staff,
after-school mentorship program
at Monte Sano Elementary School,
the National Leadership Forum
and the National Honor Society.
Thus far, during her senior year,
shehas earned further distinction
as an Erskine Scholar, a Furman
University Scholar and a Georgia
Scholar,Sheis a National Achieve
ment Scholar as well as a National
Merit Scholar. Recently, sheearned
selection and designation asa pres
tigious University of Georgia Foun
dation Fellow.
Janaka'’s intention is to attend
either Duke University, the Uni
versity of Georgia, University of
North Carolina - Chapel Hill, or
Spelman College where she will
major in English and minor in
sconomics. After attainingher doc
:orate in her chosen area of study,
she plans to become a university
yrofessor and write books and po
stry which educate, enlighten, en
sourage, inspire, and entertain.
She is the daughter of Dr. and
Virs. Mac Andrew (Janice) Bow

allows the Navy to recognize its
many sources of strength.
“I want to give something back
to my heritage by being a role
model for others,” said Rosier, the
38-year-old son of Roosevelt and
Lesile Gibson of Augusta.
As with most sailors, Rosier
wanted to join a diverse organiza
tion that afforded him the ability
to advance.

said Rosier, a 19-year-old Navy
veteran.

erates, maintains and repairs in

said.
As we move toward the future,
the Navy will continue to grow
strong through the celebration of
the heritage of its people.
