There are no small parts or small actors in The Fantasticks
By Adrienne D. Turner
Henry, the old actor, played by Richard Justice,
wonderfully befuddles the statement “there are no
small actors, only small parts” during his brief time
on the stage of “The Fantasticks.”
From the moment he makes his appearance amid
the modestly decorated set, he instantly transforms
“the longest running musical in the world” into a
comedy.
The Fantasticks, uses a mini stage, lighting poles,
two boxes, a table and a three member orchestra,
with remarkable craftiness, to set the stage. The
various scene changes are made using props en
cased in one of the boxes with the assistance of The

Mute, played by Jonathan Shores. Though he has
no lines, Jonathan simply cannot be overlooked
during the show. The impeccable timing of the
tosses and catches that were exacted between he
and the actors was impressive to say the least.
Somehow, though, through all the make-up,
Jonathan managed to exude a feeling of kindness.
He makes his way into your heart without ever
saying a word.
El Gallo, the narrator, played by Russ Harlan can
be described in two words: “Simplemente Magnifico.”
Though he says he has been away from the stage for
quite some time, acting for Mr. Harlan must be
similar to riding a bike. During his brief mono
logues, diatribes and songs, Mr. Harlan isextremely
successful in painting a picture, using the intona
tion of his voice, coupled with his body language, to
cause you to see whatever the mood dictates, in
spite of what may be on the stage. Given his
immense passion, El Gallo changes the play once
again, from a comedy to a romance.
The talent, choreography and tremendous vocal
abilities of the cast make The Fantasticks musical
the whole family would enjoy. However, be sure to
explain to children that the word «rape» used in the
play is intended in the literary sense, meaning «to
seize and carry off by force». The theatricality of the
scene in which it is used ensures that this use is
clear and not intended to be offensive.
The Fort Gordon Dinner Theatre sets the mood
for everyone. Whether you go alone, with your
significant other or with your family and friends,
you will enjoy good food and good company in a
pleasant atmosphere. Just be sure to get directions
before you go. There are no guarantees you can find
it when you get there and no one answers the
phones the night of the show.
The Fantasticks will be showing at the Fort Gor
don Dinner Theatre on March sth, 6th, 11th, 12th
and 13th.
