Foundation to honor physicians’
efforts for children’s camp
University Health Care Foun
dation will pay tribute to two mem
bers of the University Hospital
medical staff for their volunteer
work with Camp Juliet for chil
dren with diabetes. Dr. Michael
Graybeal and Dr. lan Herkowitz
will be honored during the
Foundation’s Physician Advisory
Board dinner at 6:30 p.m. on
Thursday, June 3, at the Augusta
Country Club.
MCG is official hospital sponsor of DMAT

is the official hospital sponsor of
the Augusta Area Disaster Medi
cal Assistance Team, DMAT GA

DMAT is a federal program en
rolling civilian physicians, nurses,
emergency medical technicians,
paramedics and support staff pre
pared to assist local, state and
federal authorities in the event of
anatural disaster or act of terror
ism. Teams provide prompt and
efficient medical care after a di
saster such as a hurricane, tor
nado, flood or chemical warfare.
Recent examples of DMAT deploy
ments include Oklahoma after
deadly spring tornadoes and to
New Jersey to care for Kosovo
refugees.
“Our first obligation is to our
community of Augusta Ga, fol
lowed by the state of Georgia and
ultimately our country,” says Dr.

ment. Approximately 55 local
health care professionals have
volunteered to serve. Dr.
Hawkings hopes to have at least
100 volunteers by the time they
are ready to deploy. Volunteers
outside the medical field are also
needed, especially people with com
munications experience.
As the hospital sponsor, MCG
agrees to provide hospital care
needed by patients of DMAT GA-4,
but the team also must be able to
set up and make a shift hospitalin
the field with the supplies they
have collected. “The federal gov

preresequites for federal assis
tance, Dr. Hawkins is looking for
sponsors to buy supplies for their
makeshift hospital. “Sponsor
money will stay with our DMAT
GA-4 team. They money never
goes to waste.
Dr. Hawkins believes the Au
gusta area can and will support
the readiness of the DMAT team.
“It could be anyone’s family (who
needs us). And you never know
when its going to be your family
involved,” said Dr. Hawkins. For

The University Health Care
System Speech and Hearing Cen
ter is in need of donated hearing
aids for their Donar Hearing Aid
Program.
This program started in 1991
when Medicaid eliminated cover
age ofhearing aids, is designed for
people who cannot afford to pur
chase new ones. Old, broken or
discarded hearing aids are ser
viced and re-sized for new recipi
ents.

dation of America (CCFA), Geor
gia Chapter, will hold a public
education program for patients
and families on the “Advances in
the Treatment of Inflammatory
Bowel Disease”. The program will

selected director of pharmacy at
the Medical College of Georgia
Hospital and Clinics.
Dr. May has served as acting
director of pharmacy since the
retirement of Mary Wallace
Johnson in November 1998. He
has been the associate director of
the department since July 1991
and was theassistant director from
1981 to 1991.
He has served as an adjunct
associate professor for the Uni
versity of Georgia Department of
Pharmacy Practice since 1987 and
was an adjunct assistant profes
sor from 1982 to 1987.
