Secretary of State Cathy Cox recently met with Albany State
{University President Portia Holmes-Shields (R), as well as ASU
faculty and students, while visiting the college’s campus. Both
Cox and Holmes-Shields were honored later that day at the
| Flint River Girl Scout Council’s Southwest Georgia Women of
i; Distinction Recognition Dinner for serving as positive female
irole models for young women.

Mrs. Luvenia Pearson was se
lected one of the persons who re
ceived the 1999 Senior Citizen In
spiration Awards during therecent
special Older Americans Month
Recognition Ceremonies at the
Senior Citizens Council. Thecrite
ria for nominations is as follows:
1) Individuals must be 60 years of
age or over.
2) Individuals must be residents
of Augusta-Richmond County or
members of The Senior Citizens
Council.
3) Individuals are an inspiration
to you or to others in the commu
nity through the example of their
lives, through service, or through
achievement.
4)lndividuals are using theirlat
ter years effectively through con
tinued service or through explor
ing new experiences.
Mrs. Pearson met all the criteria
and more. Sheis truly an inspira
tion to all who know her. She is
kind, compassionate, and a good
listener. Her telephone stays busy
receiving calls from people who
need to share their problems and
concerns and to receive comfort
and advice from her. Although she
