Residents discuss Underwood

Inriding through this federally
fynded housing community —it’s
apparent residents are unwilling
tq say much to authorities about
the incident and skeptical of me
dia presence.
A group of middle-aged men
gather at the entrance of the com
plex and appear approachable. In
exchange for anonymity, the men
express some concerns for the
young men they’ve watched grow
up through the years.
“This crime is not a good situa
tion. Ifthey did it, they gotta pay.
But youmust realize alot of white
people come through here,” ex
plained a 49-year-old man simply
known as “Peeco.”
The Stones were white.
“Most times, the peopleinvolved
in drugs and causing problems
don’t even live here. They ride
through, do whatever and that’s
when things godown,” said Peeco.
Another man, about 42, said

“It’s all within the discretion of
the editor. You'd consider the se
“verity of the crime for which the
suspects are charged. You might
not run the photo of a juvenile
charged with a lesser crime, but
in this case, there are no legal
requirements (prohibiting photo
release),” said Hudson.
The suspects are charged with
two counts of murder. Mr. Stone
died of gunshot wounds to the
arm, while his wife died Tuesday,
June 15, at 8:20 p.m. at the Medi
cal College of Georgia after suffer
ing what became a fatal gunshot
wound to the head.

early 1970 s and believes the com
munity has always received a bad
rap.
“They always say this is a drug
affected area. What is a drug af
fected area? Why does Underwood
alwaysget that stigma? Drugs are
everywhere. Maybe other people
are inside their houses, but drugs
are still everywhere,” he added.
The men said pizza deliveries and
taxi cabs do not make trips to
their complex which is located
about two miles from downtown
Augusta, after Broad Street turns
into Sand Bar Ferry Road.
“As far as I know, those boys
wereraised right,” said “Sleprock,”
33, who quickly changes the sub
ject back to the weekend shoot
ing. He recalls watching the
troubled trio grow up.
“Sleprock continues, “You can’t
blame this on the parents. You try
and bring ‘em up correctly. They
(authorities) want to blame the
parents, but it’s not our fault.
When they get to be a certain age,
the schools can’t handle them and
neither can the parents.”
newspaper is biased. We have to
reflect what’s happening in the
community — whether positive
or negative.”
He continued by sayingifstories
occurring in black neighborhoods
aren’tcovered, then criticism would
abound stating that the Chronicle
ignores black issues.
Kelly Tuny works for Associ
ated Press headquarters in New
York City. Legal or not, Ms. Tuny
says ethical issues should also be
addressed.
“Pictures are very powerful.
There’s really no cut and dried
answer, but the challenge is to
operate ethically. Sure, they’re
innocent until proven guilty, but
they’re charged with a very seri
ous crime,” Ms. Tuny said.
Miller said it’simportant for the
community, along with those from
his organization, tosomehow find

sothese types of stories will not be
of issue.
Another man with twosons ages
13 and 15, adds, “What do you do
when your kid is sleep when you
go to bed, but who knows where
he’s at by the time early morning
rolls around?” — making a direct
referral to the Stone murders
which took place about 6 a.m.,
according to police.
All three youths are currently
beingheld at the Richmond County
Sheriff's Department’s Phinizy
Roadlocation after being removed
from state Regional Youth Deten
tion Campus for reported uncon
trollable behavior, according to
Lt. Jack Francisco of the Sheriff’s
Department.
Peeco fondly recalls when
Underwood was a peaceful place
where older people lived in cer
tain sectors and more rowdy in
habitants stayed to themselves.
Hestarted noticing changes about
fiveor six years ago. “Thesedays,”
he says, “you can see the younger
ones making changes for the
worse. It usually happens between
ages 14 to 18. Take for example, if
you try and tell one of them to
move out the street for cars, they
might cuss you out. I remember
when we were kids, the respect
for older people was there. All .
that is gone,” he said.
“Back in our day, how dare
someone be outside the house
that time of morning. For what
reason?” asked another man who
alsowanted his identification pro
tected.
Youcan sense thatconcerns are
deep regarding the plight of the
three youths. But the men also
want to see justice done. They
clearly express that if the youths
are proven guilty, they should
suffer the necessaryconsequences
associated with committing such
a heinous crime.
“It’s because there’s no disci
pline. When they legally took away
the right to whip your child in
school or at home, that also gave
the child powers tocall 911 ifthey
felt threatened with a beating,”
explained “Sleprock.” “Now, it’s
out of hands everywhere ...
Littleton, Colorado ... every
where,” he said.
