Arthur Dickson, drummer for James Brown, dies

For at least 20 years, the legend
ary James Brown beat was carried on by
Arthur Dickson. On Friday, May 28,
Dickson died of difficulties reportedly
caused by pneumonia.
Having appeared in major motion pic
tures such as the original Blues Brothers
and Rocky, when Brown performed the hit
tune, “Living in America,” Dickson had a
low-key personality, but when it came to
kicking out funky beats of which Brown

Outdoor drama marks milestone
CHEROKEE, N.C
When the noted outdoor drama “Unto
These Hills” opened June 11%, it heralded
thebeginningofits 50* year of performances.
Rated as one of the oldest and highest
attended dramas in the United States, it
opened July 1, 1950 to a capacity audience.
Since that date it has been performed 2,942
times and seen by nearly six million
visitors in the 2,800-seat amphithe- ‘
ater.
Written by Kermit Hunter, the two
and one-half hour show covers more
than three hundred years of Cherokee
history. Beginning with the arrival of
Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in
1540, it detailsthetragiccircumstances
leading to the infamous Trail of Tears
in 1838-39 and establishment of the
Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
Notables who have been associated
with the drama include: former Geor
gia Congressman Ben Jones who also
played “Cooter” in Dukes of Hazzard,
Polly Holliday, known for her role as
“Flo” in the television sitcom Alice
about Mel’s Diner; renowned movie
director Larry Peerce; Robert
Schenkkban, Pulitzer Prize author of
Kentucky Cycle; and Louis Fletcher,
Academy Award winner for herrole in
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

stellar in his performances. ,
With Brown, Dickson had the opportu
nity. to tour the world. Band mate and
longtime friend, Danny Ray, called Dickson
a “talented gentleman who will be missed.”
Dickson’s funeral washeld in Atlanta and
was attended by Brown, Ray, ex-Famous
Flames member Bobby Byrd and represen
tatives from Brown’sband and James Brown
Enterprises. Dickson is survived by his
wife, children, family and friends. Uncon
firmed reports stated the musician was 46.
