Johnson participates in leadership program
Kenneth L. Johnson Jr., son of
overseer Kenneth L. and elder
Ardena S. Johnson, has heen ac
cepted in the Student Leaders in
Service Program at Birmingham-
Southern College. The program
will be conducted the week of
June 13-18, 1999 on the college’s
campusin Birmingham, Alabama.
The objective of the Student
Leaders in Service Program is to
expose high school students to
leadership theories and provide
opportunities to practice leader
ship through community service
projects.
Kenneth, a student at John S.
Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School,
was selected to participate in the
program with 30 other students
from Tennessee, Georgia, Missis
sippi, Florida, Delaware, Texas,
Missouri and Alabama. During
this week-long residential pro
gram, he will enhance his under
standing of self, expand his knowl
edge of leadership theories, and
understand the relationship be
tween leadership and service.
With faculty members of Birming
ham-Southern, Kenneth will ap
ply these theories to hypothetical
scenarios, experiences with com
munity service projects and other
activities. His week will begin
with an all-day outdoor leadership

ment.
Birmingham-Southern believes
thatbeingaleaderin today’s world
means making a commitment to
the community. Kenneth and his
peerswill analyzeleadershiproles
in community service projects and
discuss whether the projects are
servicing their constituents. Ken
neth will work directly and indi
rectly with programs dealing with
homelessness, diversity, and lead
ership types and apply the theo
retical understanding of leader
ship to everyday life.
Thegoal ofthe Student Leaders
in Service Program is to reach
students with various leadership
backgrounds from academic set
tings to civic groups.
Kenneth participates in the
Davidson’s Student Council, co
chairs the Volunteer Committee,
is a member of the Jazz Band,
National Mathematics Honor So
ciety and past Mathematics Team
member. This spring, he was
selected to be a member of the All
County Band and Jazz Band.
A member of the Straightway
Full Gospel Baptist Church, he
has served as co-president of a
Royale Priesthood, the church’s
youth ministry, a peer tutor and
assistant coordinator of Youth
Activities. He is also actively
involved in Teenage Spiritual
Awareness and serves on its Jun
ior Staff, is co-captain of the TSA
Step Team and was selected as
winter “Stepper of the Quarter.”
Kenneth has volunteered with the
Arts in the Heart and The Golden
Harvest Food Bank. He has been
aguest Youth Speaker for Women
of Faith Augusta, Inc., People for
Empowerment and Communities
in School.
