BThe Lucy Craft Laney Museum of
Black History will offer two sessions of
art and computer classes this summer for
children. The computer component will
focus on developing basic computer skills
and at the same time improving basiclearn
ing skills: reading, math and testing. The
art classes will focus on watercolor, oils,
pencil, clay and some crafts. A collabora
tive activity and tour to the Morris Mu
seum of Art is also a part of the curriculum.
Both classes are available for children ages
6-13 years old. All classes will be held from
9 a.m. - 12 noon. The second session runs
July 12, 1999 through August 6. For more

BThe Gertrude Herbert Institute of
Art, 506 Telfair St.in Augusta, is currently
exhibiting recent work by Augusta artist
Kathy Girdler-Engler in its main gallery.
“Recent Sculptural Work: Kathy Girdler-
Engler” will be on display until July 23™.
The first floor student gallery will exhibit
“Very Special Art,” a selection of works
from Central Savannah River Area stu
dents enrolled in special education pro
grams, from June 4-25. The third floor
student gallery will display “Augusta State
University,” photographs of Ware’s Folly
in various stages of renovation taken by
photography students of ASU faculty mem
ber Jennifer Onofrio. The exhibit will be

played in a tribute to Bob Marley on Sat.,

BThe Augusta-Richmond County
Museum, 560 Reynolds St., hostsits award
winning “Augusta’s Story” permanent ex
hibit and “Messages in Bottles: A History of
Bottling and Bottle-making in Augusta”
exhibit through Oct. 31. Museum hours
are Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and Sunday 1 - 5 p.m. For more informa

also open on July 4, Sunday, from 1 to 5
p-m. Admission will be $2 per adult and
senior citizen, $1 per child. On Wed., July
7, it’s Brown Bag History Series will fea
ture Joseph M. Lee 111, author of Augusta:
A Postcard History. Mr. Lee will begin
speaking at noon on Augusta through the
years by comparing slides of old postcards
of Augusta to contemporary photos of the
same scene. Bring your lunch and the
museum will provide a beverage and des
sert. The program is free for members, $2
for non-members. Call the museum for

benefit the United Cerebral Palsy of the

blankets for seating. A limited number of
rental chairs will be available.

BCoca-Cola Freedom Fest ‘99 will be
held on Sat., July 3, at the Fort Gordon
Recreation Area at Lake Thurmond, from
