Acapulco Black Film Festival awards winners announced

Pam Grier receive career
achievement awards
Winners of the 1999 Black Film
Awards and HBO Short Film Award
were announced at the third annual
Acapulco Black Film Festival. The
Festival is an annual celebration of
Black cinema held in the resort dis
trict of Acapulco, Mexico.
The gala award ceremony held on
the Festival’s closing night Saturday,
June 12, was hosted by writer/director
Robert Townsend. Veteran actors
Samuel L. Jackson and Pam Grier
were recipients of this year’s Career
Achievement Awards. The first Trail
blazer Award was presented to Byron
Lewis, chairman and CEO, UniWorld
Group, Inc., and founder of the
Acapulco Black Film Festival for his
many contributions to ethnic advertis
ing and film marketing.
The winners of the Black Film
Awards are:
- Best Film: The Negotiator (Warner
Bros.)
- Best Director: F. Gary Gray, The
Negotiator
- Best Screenplay: Christopher Scott

Theatres” Best of Festival Awards are:

- International: Pieces of Identity,
director Mweze Ngangura
Home Box Office (HBO) awarded
the HBO Short Film Award to aspir
ing filmmaker Rod Gailes, writer/di
rector of Twin Cousins. The runner
ups were Treva Etienne, writer/direc
tor of Driving Miss Crazy and
Jarmaine Encarnacion, writer/direc
tor of Possum. Gailes will receive a
$5,000 grant and a paid apprentice
ship with HBO Original Movies, the
network’s movie division. The two
runner-ups will also receive paid ap
prenticeships on upcoming HBO films.
