Mayor Bob Young was the key
note speaker at the Project Suc
cess sixth year celebration lun

the Augusta-Richmond County
Civic Center.
The theme for this years event
was, “Strengthen Parents-Pupils-
Partnerships.”
Mr. Young inspired both young
and old. Holding up a cell phone
as a prop, he flashed back to a
time before it existed and re
minded the audience, “This had
to come from someone’s mind.”
The message was clear, you, too,
can achieve greatness and live
life to its fullest potential.

Willie Mae Childs receives award:
By Timothy Cox b
AUGUSTA FOCUS Staff Writer
Willie Mae Childs realizes some
young black men have unique
problems that often require spe
cialized ways to resolve their is
sues. She’s also bullish on making
sure young boys who come into
her presence, ultimately, develop
into strong, responsible men.
Ms. Childs’ commitment has
earned her the first-ever Augusta
Focus/K155.96.3 Community
Award. Her civiceffortshavebeen
recognized largely because of her
realization that too often, once
young black boys have reached a
certain age group, generally early
teens, the job becomes more diffi
cult in bridging the gap to become
quality young men without being
scarred by violent actions and bi
ases that often perpetuate irrepa
rable stereotypes, she said.
As an associate minister under
the Rev. Dr. Clarence Joyner at
Broadway Baptist Church in
Barton Chapel, Ms. Childs feels
it’s most important to quickly ad
dress behavioral problems black
youngsters may reflect. “People
tend to write them off quickly. I
disagree. Many times, they (the
boys) are searching for someone
to guide them and help lead them
youth problems, such as drugs,
sex and violence; this helps to
keep the parents informed
about what is going on with
today’s youth.
Since the program began in
1993 it has served over 500
members and still welcomes
new members.
