By 1994, the group had grown to
nearly 600 member. It changed
its name to the hipper d’Zert Club
and moved daytime functionstoa
downtown location. When
Giddiens and Salahuddinreturned
from a trip to Africa they were
convinced that the children they
served needed tolearn more about
their history and culture.
In early 1997, they placed a
newspaper ad promising children
ages 10-14 a free trip to Africa.
Hundreds responded, only to find
out there was a catch: The trip
would have to be earned. :
Each child would have to enroll
in the d’Zert Club’s Teen Summit
1000. The new program required
doing research assisngments,
keeping a C average or better in
school, going on six cultural field
trips, attendingbimonthly assem
blies at Temple University, and
helping with fund raising. Last
summer the first 38 graduates
went to The Gambia and Senegal
along with 44 adults.
During last year’s visit to The
Gambia, the mayor and members
of the city council of the captial
city of Banjul made the members
of the d’Zert Club honorary citi
zens. Nearly 100 children are pre
paring for the trip to Ghana this
summer, with classes preparing
for trips to South Africanext year
and Egypt in 2001.
Thisyear like the previous year,
Teen Summit 1000 students will
visit slave dungeons where Afri
cans were housed before being
transported to the Americas.

“Asother children saw the slave
dungeons. on Goree Island in
Senegal, these children will see
the slave dungeons of Elmina and
Cape Coast in Ghana,” said
Giddiens.
Giddiens, who works as an en
tertainment lawyer in Philadel
phia, also said each child is given
extensive instructions about the
country of destination. Those in
structions include a course on at
least one of a countries indig
enous languages, instruction on
the countries culture as well ason
how to exchange U.S. dollars for
foreign currency.
This year for the first time, the
d’Zert Club will sponsor a parade
and celebration in the North West
section of Philadephia paying trib
ute toJuneteenth. Salahuddin said
because of the “significance” of
Juneteenth of June 19*in African
American history, the d’Zert Club
wants tomakeitlocally an annual
celebration. '
Juneteenth is the oldest known
celebration of the ending of sla
very. Dating back to 1865, it was
on June 19* that Union soldiers,
led by Major General Gordon
Granger landed at Galveston,
Texas with news that the war had
ended and that all slaves were
now free. This was two and a half
years after the signing of the
Emancipation Proclamation. Ac
cording to one report, one of the
original messengers of this good
news was murdered to delay the
inevitable freedom of the descen
dants of Africa who were at the
time held in slavery. a 0
According to Philadelphia Man
aging Director, Joe Certaine, who
reenacts the Civil War and is a
lecturer on African American in
volvement the war between the
North and South, “We are not‘
Fourth of July people, but we are
June 19* people.” ]
Salahuddin, whojoined the NOI
in 1970, pays tribute to the Honor
able Elijah Muhammad for much
of his “knowledge and awareness
of self.” The former lieutenant
and minister is a graduate of
Howard University with a degree
in accounting. He said the d’Zert }
Club has reached out “to all the ‘
marchingbandsand drill teamsin
Philadelphia (to be a part of the
parade).
“A Juneteenth tribute will take
place directly following the pa
rade. “The tribute will include: a
special guest speaker, live enter
tainment, drill team exhibition, a
double Dutch demonstration, a
clown show, food and craft vend
ers. Like the trip to Africa, the
Juneteenth celebration teaches
young people about their culture,
their ancestors and their true his
tory.”
At the conclusion of Akbar
Muhammad’s speech at Triumph
Baptist Church, a 14 year old
eighth grader named Cierra
Lessene expressed the sentiments
ofthe young membersofthe d’Zert
Club, “Going to Ghana is a won
derful opportunity for us to unite
(with Africans) as we venture to
the land of our ancestors.” |
