African Dance will present a summer
session of African dance classes for chil
dren ages 5-12 on Saturdays from July 10
through August 7. Five sessions of one
hour each will culminate with an end-of
session community recital performance. For

EThe Augusta Aquatics Center will
be holding a swimming clinic on July 11,
from 1-4 p.m. Guest speaker will be Eric
Waunderlich, 1996 Olympian and American
record holder, who will also be doing a
stroke clinic in the water. Cost will be $2
per person at the door. Mr. Wunderlich will
be available for autographs after the clinic.

EBarnes & Noble, 1336 Augusta West
Pkwy. of Augusta, will host Reba’s First
Book Club on Sat., July 10, at 2 p.m. Selec
tions will beread from “Reba Recommends.”
Reba’s First Book Club is a monthly story
time event that benefits the national non
profit organization First Book, which gives
disadvantaged children new books of their
own. In our community, First Book sup
ports the Augusta Local Advisory Board.
The bookstore will also hold a booksigning
with Maj. Gen. Perry M. Smith for his book,
A Hero Among Heroes, from 3-5 p.m. Gen.
Smith’s subject is Jimmie Dyess, a marine
from Augusta who earned American’s two
highest awards for heroism. Gen. Smith is
aninternationally known speaker, TV com
mentator, best-selling author and the presi
dent of Visionary Leadership of Augusta.
The store will also hold Open Mike Night at
7:30 p.m.
EBorders Books & Music, 257 Robert
C. Daniel Jr. Pkwy. of Augusta, will hold
Borders Explorer Art Camps in two ses
sions: July 12-16 and July 26-30. Free to

be making personal picture I.D. cards for
seniors and disabled persons on Monday,

EAppleby Library, Walton Way at
Johns Rd., will hold a Garden Concert on
Tues., July 13, at 8 p.m. Featured will be
classical piano music by Clara Park, who is
on the music faculty of Georgia Southern
University. Bring your own lawn chairs or
blankets for seating. A limited number of
rental chairs will be available.
EThe Augusta-Richmond County
Museum, 560 Reynolds St., hostsits award
winning “Augusta’s Story” permanent ex
hibit and “Messages in Bottles: A History of
Bottling and Bottle-making in Augusta”
exhibit through Oct. 31. The “Georgia
Games Art in Motion Exhibition” will be
located in the rotunda for July. Museum
hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5
.p-m., and Sunday 1. - 5 p.m. For more

Artist Reception for Katherine Crossan
onSun.,July 11, from 3-sp.m. Ms. Crossan
will show her work in acrylics. On Thurs.,
July 15, Dr. Warren Umansky, child de
velopment specialist, will conduct a potty
training session at 7 p.m. Youngsters will
be occupied during this seminar with sto
ries and activities. First Book Story Time
will be held on Sat., July 17, at 2 p.m.

#The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of
Black History will offer two sessions of
art and computer classes this summer for
children. The computer component will
focus on developing basic computer skills
and at the same time improving basic
learning skills: reading, math and test
ing. The art classes will focus on water
color, oils, pencil, clay and some crafts. A
collaborative activity and tour to the Mor
ris Museum of Art is also a part of the
curriculum. Both classes are available for
children ages 6-13 years old. All classes
will be held from 9 a.m. - 12 noon. The
second session runs July 12, 1999 through
