Park resident Arthur Smith de
scribes what he and many other
residents have learned as aresult
of staying the course in the face of
what seemed to be insurmount

Residents of Augusta’s tortured
communities of Hyde Park,
Aragon Park and Virginia subdivi

hurdle of what has been a very
long race by receiving a $200,000
Brownsfield Grant from the U.S.
government. The Brownsfield,
initiated under the Clinton/Gore
administration, is intended to
bring up standards in inner city
neighborhoods, changing con
demned areasintovitalindustrial
areas. This grant will be used to
examine the area around
Goldberg’s Junkyard for contami
nation.
After the city’s first attempt at
the grant failed in 1997, select
members of the community came
together and drafted a proposal,
signed by Mayor Bob Young.
“It’s the first of it’s kind to be
generated by the community, not
thecity,” said Charles Utley, presi
dent of Hyde Park Neighborhood
Association.

ing the grant for three years, hav
