Convention may
be lost bhecause
of police brutality
concerns
ALEXANDRIA, La.
' (AP)Theblack National Baptist
Convention of America may not
meet in Alexandria next year as
planned because of concerns about
police brutality.
The black ministers with Citi
zensof Alexandriaand P.O.W.E.R.
(People Organized Working for
Equal Rights)said Fridaythey are
asking the convention president
to move a five-day Mid-Winter
Board Meeting set for February to
another city unless “this police
dituation is taken care of,” the
Rev. Solomon Shorter said.
» Furthermore, the ministers
announced that City Council Presi
dent Charles F. Smith Jr. is the
“first target” of their effort to re
call elected city officials they be
lieve are unresponsive to them.
“We’re not here just blowing in
the wind,” Shorter said. “We'’re
bringing forth change. And for
those politicians who refuse to
hear our cry, for those in leader
ship who refuse to do anything to
reach out to the needs of the
eitizenry of this city, we will deal
with them accordingly.”
* E. Edward Jones, president of
the National Baptist Convention
said heis somewhat worried about
alleged police brutality problems
in Alexandria.
. “My concern is, if there is bru
tality in Alexandria among the
police, then what is there to sug
gest that some of our people may
not be accosted?” Jones said. “It
doesn’t seem to be that bad, but
these are questions that inevita
bly arise.” -'
- About 1,000 people are expected
to take part in the convention.
~ Jones said the convention has
held meetings in Alexandria in
the past and has always had “ex
cellent cooperation” fromthecity.
- That’s why he’s not convinced,
based on talking with Shorter
dlone, that the problem is severe
enough to warrant moving the
meeting.
