community involvement.

tion in the Engineering Depart
ment at the Uptown Division of
the medical center. Her colleagues
say she is always willing to go
beyond what is “expected”,
whether it is her responsibility or
a spontaneous request. Because
the safety office is a remote to
patient care areas, Williams never
hesitates to assist patients or visi
tors who look lost or need direc
tions to the main hospital. Her
willingnesstolend a helpinghand
is well known throughout the
medical center. She can be counted
on to help staff locate needed in

Williams took the initiative to
develop a tracking system that
would enable her to provide safety
training information to other ser
vice lines when requested. Will

Leta Fran Shelton, RN
is involved in a mentoring pro
gram for girls. She has designed
thebulletins and programs for the
Ward Chapel AME Sanctuary
Choir and for the 75" Anniversary
of the Senior and Junior Usher
Board.

Staff Nurse-Surgery Service
Line
Fran Shelton is a staff nurse in
the Post Anesthesia Care Unit
(PACU) and Endoscopy Unit at
the Downtown Division. She has
built a solid reputation for clinical
competence, patient advocacy and
development of health care teams
to provide the necessary services
to her patients. Shelton shares
her expertise with processional
nursing and support personnel.
She has provided hospital wide
CPRtraining. She has alsotaught
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
classesin the community at facili
ties such as Magnolia Hill Nurs
ing Home and Beulah Grove Bap
tist Church. Shelton is a preceptor
for LPN/RN students from area
schools (MCG, Eisenhower Army
Medical Center, Augusta Tech)
when they are assigned to PACU/
Endoscopy areas. She collaborated
with physicians and pharmacists
to write protocol for the Demerol
Patient Controlled Analgesia
(PCA). As aresult, pain manage
mentfor patientswho are allergic
to: Morphine can be managed.
Shelton is a membér of Central
Baptist Church where she is ac
tivelyinvolved with the children’s
choir and children’s church. She
coordinatesblood drives and health
fairs with Beulah Grove Baptist
church. Shelton believes that
laughter promoteshealingand has
a clown ministry visiting area
nursing homes and day care cen
ters.
