needed for first
adapted water
skiing program
The Medical College of Georgia
Children’s Medical Centerwill hold
its first Wee Can Ski program, a
water skiing program adapted for
physically challenged children,on
Aug. 14, from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., at
Fort Gordon’s recreational area
at Clarks Hill Lake.
“These kids may have trouble
walking, and skiing is something
they would never dream they
could do,” said Mary Mark Perkins,
a physical therapist at MCG
Children’s Medical Center. “Be
ing able to water ski gives them a
great sense of accomplishment.”
Twenty-five children, ages five
to 18, will ski on specially de
signed mono skis. Boats with quick
release ski ropes will pull the
skiers and each boat will be fol
lowed by another for the child’s
safety. A pontoon boat will be
available for families and children
who do not want to water ski.
“Whether they decide to ski or
not, it is a great chance for par
ents and children to socialize with
others facing the same chal
lenges,” said Mrs. Perkins.
Fifty to 75 volunteers will be
needed to help put life jackets on
the skiers, prepare them to ski
and catch them when they return
to the shore. “We are not looking
for volunteers just in the medical
field. We are looking for people
who want to help these kids expe
rience something they never
thought possible,” said Mrs.
Perkins.
Sconyers Barbecue and Ken
tucky Fried Chicken will provide
lunch for the skiers and volun
teers. For more information on
volunteering or participant regis
tration, please call the MCG
