Karlyn Lothery’s career blossoms

AUGUSTA
Karlyn Lothery will never
forget what happened the first
time she delivered a live TV
news broadcast. She
hyperventilated.
“I tried to catch my breath,
but every word came out
choppy, as if I were gasping
for air,” she laughed — fur
ther demonstratingwhat hap
pened that evening. A humor
ous flashback wasn’t a laugh
ing matter then. Viewers of
her 5 p.m. newscast on
WRDW-TV, News 12, aren’t
afforded any hints that Karlyn
may have had troubles early
in her career. Interestingly,
while she’s just four years re
moved from her college mates
at Georgetown University in
Washington, D.C., Karlyn’s
on-screen presence exudes a

Karlyn’s efforts have contrib
uted to the station being the
No. 1 television station in the
Augusta market, based on
Nielsen ratings. “Undoubt
edly, Karlyn has done a great
job,” said Jefferies, noting that
Channel 12 had a 50 percent
higher rating over its nearest
competitor, WJBF-Channel 6,
during May ratings sweeps.
Backtoher early-career bout
with nervous energy, Karlyn
credits her management at
WCSC-TV in Charleston for
keeping the faith. “They put
me right back on the air after
I hyperventilated. They fig
ured the only way was to work
through it.”
Augusta viewers should
thank the folks in Charleston,
because locally, it’s apparent
Karlyn’s young career is
headed for bigger and better

marketing graduate admits
she’d love returningtoD.C. as
areporter in a city basking in
international politics and its
“Chocolate City” appeal —

middle class. But for now,
Karlyn feels quite at “home”
working in the Augusta-CSRA
market.
Since arriving at the Gar
den City in 1997, Karlyn says
her skills have done nothing
but escalate — thanks to Tom
Campbell, her unofficial men
tor and co-anchor during
WRDW’s 5 p.m. report.
“Tom has been wonderful,”
she said. “He didn’t have to,
but after most newscasts, he’ll
question me about various
situations in order to make
sure I'm reaching some point
of comfort.” Campbell, a 26-
