Moving in the Spirit returns
Moving in the Spirit will be
returning to Augusta this
summer as part of their ninth
annual summer tour. The
group will be traveling to Ar
kansas as well as throughout
Georgia to perform. Moving
in the Spirit’s Apprentice Cor
poration is a dynamic group
of young dancers that perform
throughout Atlanta’s metro
politan area. The company
provides participating teens
with intensive dance instru
ment and performance oppor
tunities. The group focuses
on using dance to enforce the
values of respect, responsibil
ity, discipline, and commit
ment. To encourage a high
level of commitment, each stu
dent signs a contract describ
ing goals and expectations for
the year. The parents of each

agreeing to support the stu
dent in fulfilling his or her
obligations.
The Apprentice Company is
part of a larger organization
based in southeast Atlanta
called the Movingin the Spirit
(MITS). Founded by local art
ist Dana Phelps Marschalk
and her college, Leah Mann,
MITS has a 13-year history
workingin communitiesin At
lanta and across the nation.
In addition to the Apprentice
Corporation, Moving in the
Spirit hosts several other pro
grams which include Stepping
Stones, junior Company, Per
formance Company,
Kinetechs, and The Resource
Network. These programs en
compass a established base of
education programs for chil
venue for local and national
entrepreneurs. Areduced rate
is offered to vendors who sign
up by August 15. This fee en
titles each vendor to a space
approximately 6'x 10'. All ven
dor spaces are easily accessible
to patrons who will be in atten
dance. Vendors are respon
sible for their own set ups and
may set up as early as noon on
dren and teens, a counseling/
guidance resource for young
participants, and a perfor
mance company composed of
professional dancers, choreog
raphers, and teachers. It is
the mission of Moving in the
Spirit to utilize dance as a fun
and creative tool to develop
workplace values and life
skills, reinforce school curricu
lum, and give voice to issues
pertinent tosociety today, and
address issues of self-esteem.
Moving in the Spirit will be
performing at McDuffie Woods
Center on Tuesday, July 27, at
1 p.m., at May Park Center on
Wednesday,July2B,at 10a.m.,
and at Savannah Rapids Pa
vilion, Wednesday evening, at
7 p.m. All performances will
be free and open to the public.

Electrical outlets are limited
and will be assigned to those
who pay the vendor fee by the
priority date. Proceeds from
the event will benefit the 1999
Paine College/UNCF Cam

HArts in the Park 1999 will be a series of free two-hour
workshops conducted in area parks. The Augusta-Richmond
County Recreation and Parks Dept. and Gertrude Herbert
Institute of Art will offer the nine workshops featuring Native
Americans. Students will learn about Chippewa Indians and
design and create a Chippewa Dream Catcher. The following
dates and locations are: July 26 - McDuffie Woods Community
Center; July 27 - Blythe Community Center; July 28 -
Hephzibah/Carroll Community Center; July 29 - Mcßean
Community Center; and July 30 - Bernie Ward Community

Swing Big Band featuring Wayne Hoey on Thursday, July 29,

St., hosts its award-winning “Augusta’s Story” permanent
exhibit and “Messages in Bottles: A History of Bottling and
Bottle-making in Augusta” exhibit through Oct. 31. The
“Georgia Games Art in Motion Exhibition” will be located in
the rotunda for July. Museum hours are Tuesday - Saturday,
