Sop})isticatecl Gent celebrates 5-year mark
pend ten minutes with
Tenare Hendrieth and
you quickly realize he dis
pels any notion he could be a laid
back-kinda-guy. Surely, on first
impression, the man exudes a con
fidentcool debonair —reflective
of the stylish mens wear he offers
at his business called Sophisti
cated Gents. But soon enough,
it’sapparent Tenare (pronounced
tin-ARR), has a fiery business
savvy which obviously, will burn
for many years to come.
Five years as successful
elothier in Augusta market
In celebrating his fifth year as
an Augusta area businessman,
Tenare emphatically thanks the
inany customers who have sup
ported him in hisventure. During
this time, he has moved the busi
niess from Kings Way off Central
Ave., to Kissingbower Road and
last November, moved to 3526
Wrightsboro Road, five minutes
from Augusta Mall. In fact, he’s
already reaping the benefits of the
location change considering So
phisticated Gents’ now attracts a
more diverse customer base —
mainly from neighboring Colum
bia County.
Through market research,
store created niche for “tradi
tional” Augusta men
Having already established re
tail shopsin the Alabama market,
Tenare quickly discovered Au
gusta was a conservative town
with a “traditional” styling ap
proach toward men. While he ap
preciates conservative ways,
Tenare also knew plain guys also
enjoy being uniquely dressed.
Therefore, his store features cool
styles worn by stars like Michael
Jordan, Magic Johnson and min
isters such as Creflo Dollar and
T.D. Jakes.

Atlanta’s Affirmative Action Program, according
to the findings of the Georgia Black Chamber of
Commerce.
Lou Walker, president of GBCC, along with
elder statesman, state representative Billy
McKinney, are exposing some interesting infor
mation about the Southeastern Legal Founda
tion, the firm that is attacking Atlanta’s affirma

search, we have found some interesting facts
about one of SLF’s founding members and its
largest contributor, Flowers Industries,” said
Walker.
Flowers Industries, Inc. located in Thomasville,
Ga. distributes baked, frozen and snack foods
nationwide with several outlet stores around the
metro Atlanta area. Their main bakery isin Villa

productsseen on your favorite grocery store shelves
such as Roman Meal, Natures’s Own, Sunbeam

of Mrs. Smith’s delectable pies, you should know
that you are supporting Flowers Industries,” ex

see any black elves up in the familiar treehouse
commercials.”
Walker says that the atéempt to abolish affirma
tive action is a serious problem for all business
owners of color. “This is a re-enactment of the
‘6os,” insists Walker. “We had better treat it the
same as we treated the civil rights movement. We
must go back to the streets with the rallies and
most importantly the marches and the picketing
that made an impact. All of us, the business

waist or a slim fellow with a 32-

shops found in malls or major

stock to a 42-inch waist. Not at
Sophisticated Gent. Jacket sizes
ranging in the late-40s_or 50s;
stylish silk shirts with flair; shoes,
boots of all types and sizes —
that’s what keeps customers com

they would not be in the board rooms today.”
The leadership of the GBCC has the support of
the Coalition to Save Affirmative Action toboycott

by veteran civil rights leader, Rev. Hosea Will

GBCC along with a coalition of civil rights groups,
community, business and religious leaders has
launched a campaign of support for Mayor Bill
Campbell in the fight against the abolishment of
affirmative action.
“The fight is on, and the struggle continues,”
stated Walker. “We are fighting for the economic

Quality TV advertisements
DO NOT mean high prices!
When it comes to promoting his
business, Tenare goes all out. He
currently runs regular commer
cial segments on local cable sta
tions. Because he enjoys quality
promotions, QUALITY is also
paramount when it comes to his
clothes. Much of his merchandise
is purchased in New York City
and Canada, of which he saysisa
budding clothing mecca. One im
portant aspect he’s learned dur
ing his five years in Augusta, is
the ability to set a fair price-point.
“That was something I hadto
learn. It's a matter ofbeing able to
sell quality, contemporary mer
chandise while still maintaining
reasonable prices,” he explained.
So, whenever Tenare asks the
question, “I thought you Knew?”
in his commercials, the answer is,
“That Sophisticated Genthasgreat
