“Weare preparing Paine students

Dr. Lewis.
Under Dr. Lewis, Paine’s en

People
organizations asked me to come
on their boards, and wherever I
go, I'm spreading the message of
Paine College,” said Dr. Lewis.
During basketball and volley
ball season, you will find Dr. Lewis
and her husband in the bleachers
waving their purple and white
pompoms. Dr. Lewis in high
school ran track, played basket
ball and shortstop in softball. Her
husband Dr. Ron Lewis was the
fastest sprinterin his age groupin
high school and he also ran cross
country in college.
Raised in Winding Gulf, West
Virginia, her positive perspective
about life comes from her par
ents. Her father was a school
teacher with the same educational
orientation about access that you
have to help people do it. “I had
two cousins that were one year
older than I but the same height.
When they went to school in the
first grade and came back read
ing, I just could not handle it,
because we had done everything
together up until that point, somy
dad went and got a copy of their
school book and taught me to
read. That was the point where I
got hooked on education one year
before the first grade.
“My mother did not go to col
lege, but she had the same atti
tude I have. She always told me I
could do anything that I wanted
to. She’s a fearless, very strong
woman with a soft veneer. She
looked lighthearted with a good
sense of humor, was always joy
ful, and if you did not know her
well, you would think she was
delicate. She was very supportive,
but she would have been shocked
if I had been snobbish. She told
me to dowell, get good grades and
be the first whatever I wanted to
be. In life you are supposed to be
grateful for what you have, and
try and figure how to help some
oneelse achieve their goals. Take
your job and your mission seri
ously but do not take yourself too
seriously. What you are doing is
important, but you are only one
human; and if you have a good
spiritual base, you will achieve,”
she said. At this printing, Dr.
Lewis has just returned from a
trip to South Africa with students
and faculty having presented pa
pers at the Conference of the As
sociation of Caribbean Studies, of
which Paine’s Dr. Claudia Jones,
vice president of Paine College

not only her and Paine College,
but her leadership style as well’
She has given Paine alumni from

Dr. Lewis has added to so many
