“All of these events help create a
positive community spirit and give
peoplea sense of community pride,”
Johnson said. “Each one has its
own identity and involves people
of different racial and cultural back
grounds. Anytime you have people
congregate downtown it's a good
thing. I'm sure the merchants are
pleased.”
The city of Tifton and its Main
Street Program sponsor most of
the events except for Love Affair
and Arts in Black, a celebration of
African-American culture, which
are sponsored by the Arts Expeni
ment Station.
Love Affair has been around for
20 years and draws an estimated
m).OO%people. It is the oldest festi
val in Tifton and generates major
revenue for the area.
Tiften’s Christmas parade has
also been around for two decades
and attracted close to 8,000 specta
tors two weeks ago, according to
Tifton Main Street Director Julie
Smith.
Adding to the success of the pa
rade, Bmith and Tifton resident
Becky Mann came up with the idea
for H«:wtown Holidays. The first
year Christmas celebration fea
tured food vendors, information
booths, games, cartoon characters
and other family events.
“These events are particularly
important todowntown ifthey help
identify it as a fun place to be,"
Tifton City Manager Charlie
Howell said. .
Although city officials have been
eager o bring new festivals to town,
some simply fell into their laps. Fi
esta Del Pueblo was held in Omega
its firdt two years until organizers
requested a move to Tifton.
The Tift County Commission on
Children & Youth sponsored Cel
