The radio and record indus
try was recently saddened af
ter learning about the death of
radio pioneer Jack “The Rap
per” Gibson. Having gained
newfound popularity in the
past 20 years, based on his
“Family Affair” music conven
tion which was usually held in
Atlanta, Gibson was the first
voice ever heard over WERD
AM in Atlanta in 1955.
Always a proponent for
black radio deejays, Gibson's
four-day “Family Affair” was
known for providing a place
for artists and media types an
outlet to talk shop at lectures
and seminars, while the
evening hours offered a cooled
out, social setting where record
companies like Motown and
Columbia sponsored suites
where new artists were intro
duced and current artists were
promoted.
This reporter attended the
conference on numerous occa
sions and noted the appear
ance of James Brown, Gladys
Knight, Johnny “Guitar”
