women’s health initiative.
According to Lake, the survey
showed that men and women
strongly believe that women de
serve the same quality of care as
men and are alarmed by the ex
ample of the discrepancy in the
treatment and death of women
fromheartattacks. Secondly, men
and women believe that women
deserve the same access to qual
ity care, to new technology and
diagnostic tests, and to knowl
edge of risk.
While there are many individual
organizations that focus on spe
cific women’s illnesses, this is the
first time a group is gathering to
focus on the general unmet health
care needs of women. This issue
becomes especially important as
the nation’s female population
grows older and policy makers
and the general public struggle
with its chronic health care chal
lenge.
For example, in the 2000 Fed
eral budget, less than 15 percent
of the National Institutes of
Health budget was devoted to
women’s health research. In ad
dition, only 25 percent of women
over the age of 50 are screened for
colon cancer and only nine per
cent of women 65 and older, un
der Medicare, had a bone density

New patch might help a _
woman’s diminished sex drive
Houston - A testosterone patch
designed to improve the sex drive
of women ho have had their ova
ries removed is the focus of a new
study.
According to Dr. John Buster,
professor of Obstetrics and Gyne
cology at Baylor College of Medi
cine in Houston and one of the
study’s lead investigators.
“Women who have had ovarian
surgery might experience asmuch
as a 50 percent decrease in test
osterone. The loss of testosterone
can affect a woman’s sex drive,
decrease her energy, muscle
strength and cognitive abilities
and contribute to bone loss. How
ever, we're evaluating how the
patch affects sex driver.”
The small patch is placed on the
woman’s abdomen. Testosterone
is absorbed through the skin into
the circulation in a way that
closely mimics the normal ovary.
“This patch is much more effi
cient than other male-type hor
mones given to women,” Buster
said. “Others are taken orally,

types of hormones.”
The goal of the study is to find
the proper amount of testoster
one to give these women. Every
woman in the study will receive
one of these doses, or an inactive
patch.
“Participants will be asked to
answer questions abdut their
sexual activity, relationships and
general well-being,” Buster said.
“We will monitor women before,
during and after using the patch
to determine the proper dosage.
The process will take eight
months.”
Researchers are seekingwomen
ages 20 to 70 who have had their
uterus and both ovaries removed.
“The loss of sex drive in these
women is a problem that hasbeen
overlooked for too long,” Buster
said. “We believe this patch will
be successful in providing women
with the testosterone needed to
boost their sex driver.”
