Delta Sigma Theta alumnae active in community
During the 1999-2000 soror

Augusta Alumnae Chapter of
Delta Sigma Theta Inc. have
been actively involved in sev
eral community projects de
signed to meet national initia
tives.
Most notable is the Dr. Betty
Shabazz Academy which was
established by the sorority as a
part of their Partners in Educa-

The Augusta Mini Theatre, Inc.
hasreceived atechnical assistance
grant from the Georgia Council of
the Arts for the July 1, 1999 - June
30, 2000 fiscal year. The SI,OOO
grant must be matched by $1,060
cash match. :
The purpose of the grant is to
provide funds for the Theatre to
hire a consultant to assist the The
atre with developing a three-year
planin the areas of programming,
board development and adminis
tration.
The Theatre has hired a consult
ant, Corinne B. Anderson, execu
tive director of Project Magic in
Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Anderson
has visited Augusta several times
during the fiscal year and meets
with the Theatre’s board and staff
to guide the development of the
three-year plan.
Augusta Mini Theatre, founded
by Tyrone J. Butler in 1975, is a
non-profit, tax-exempt arts agency
and offers classes in piano and
drama. It is located at 430 8"
Street in downtown Augusta. For

Ft. Gordon OWC
awards over
$12,500 locally
The Fort Gordon Officers’ Wives’
Club (OWC) board members met
and awarded over $12,500 to 28
area non-profit organizations, hu
man care agencies and schools.

The OWC funds its grant pro
gram with the profits from the fall
and spring flea markets and the
Fort Gordon Thrift Shop.
Augusta Concert
Band hosts
Memorial Day
performance
The Ninth Annual “All-Ameri
can” Memorial Day Concert by
the Augusta Concert Band will be
presented on Monday, May 29, at
7 p.m. in the Jessye Norman
Riverfront Amphitheater. Admis
sion is free but freewill donations
will be accepted. The program
chronicles a wide range of Ameri
can patriotic, folk and popular
music. Conductors will be Dr.
Alan Drake, musical director; Ben
Easter, assistant conductor;
Jeannie Butler, Greenbrier El
ementary School; and Sgt. David
Eelman of the Ft. Gordon Signal
Corps Band. Four patriotic Sousa
marches will be performed. Popu
lar and Broadway music will in
clude amedleyof Duke Ellington’s
hits, “Music of the Night” from
Phantom of the Opera featuring
Ryan Dukes, trumpet soloist, and
the symphonic scenario of music
from the musical South Pacific. A
special salute to veterans will in
clude “Salute to the Patriots” and
“Armed Forces Salute.”

concert will be performed on May
25 at 7 p.m. in North Augusta’s
Living History Park.

p.m., the sorors volunteer to work
