Bank of America
enlists record
number of
minority firms in
largest corporate
brand transition
Bank of Americaannounced it has
signed contracts totaling more than
S3O million with 29 minority and
woman owned firms todate tohelpit
implementitsnationalbrand change
out the largest corporate brand
change in history.
The new Bank of America created
by the merger of Nationsßank and
Bank of America last fall, in April
began converting toitsnewbrand.ln
all, more than 45,000 signs across
the nation will be changed to the
company’s expanded name and new
logo. The process which will be com
pleted sometime in 2000, will ulti
mately involve replacing more than
6,000 form masters, excluding print
inganddistributionand over 100,000
merchandisingelements,in addition
to exterior and interior signage.
Althoughthetotal cost ofthebrand
change out is not being disclose, by
the time the entire rebranding pro
cess is completed, Bank of America
estimatesit willhavereached a com
pany wide level of 15 percent minor
ity participation in the process. The
vendor contracts already represent
services being provided at the na
tional, regional and local levels.
“Minority and women owned busi
nesses and their survival are critical
to the success of the U.S. economy,
and they are equally as important to
us as we build our company,” said
Dorothy Brothers, national director
of the Bank of America Minority
Business Development Group. “Es
tablishing relationships with these
minority suppliers is only a small
part of the commitment we have
made to be the leader in providing
MBEsS every opportunity to share in
the success of our national franchise.
Seventeenvendorshavecorporate
contracts with the Bank of America
exclusively for the manufacturing
and installation of the new signs
nationwide. Four ofthose companies
are minority vendors; they include
LugoConstructionin Seattle; South
ern Statesin Tulsa, OK; Blye Associ
ates in Charlotte, and THE Samuel
Group in Dallas.
Lugo Construction, a Hispanic
minority business enterprise, has
received the entire Northwest U.S.
contract for installation of the Bank
of America exterior signs and ATM
surrounds. The total cost of the con
tractis expected to exceed $6 million.
Lugo Construction will also be
partnering with other minority and
women owned firms in the North
west to accomplish their part of the
brand change out project.
“Being selected to participate in
the bank’s branding process in the
Northwest is a dream come true,”
said Adrian Lugo, president of Lugo
Construction. “Bank of America’s
commitment to involving minority
businessesin their procurement pro
cess company wide is obvious, and it
should be commended.”
Collectively, the 32 minority ven
dorsinvolvedinthe Bank of America
brand transition have all increased
or have immediate plans to increase
their employment as a direct result
of their new contracts with the bank.
Last February Bank of America’s
management committee made an
unprecedented commitmenttospend
15 percent of its total procurement
budget with woman and minority
ownedbusinesses. Thebankalsohas
mandated that all bidders for bank
business source 15 percent of their
product from minority and woman
~ owned firms. .
~ In 1998, without such a commit
ment in place, the new company’s
combined spending with minority,
disabled and woman owned busi
nesses totaled more than $258 mil
lion.
Each of the companies involved in
the process is responsible for differ
ent aspects of the brand transition,
but their collective efforts will con
tribute substantially to the bottom
line,
perature Insulations, exports to
over forty countries and has been
in the export market for forty
years. This portion ofthe sales for
Thermal Ceramics supports ap
proximately 90 jobs here in Au
gusta. Using a multiplier of two,
the total estimated impact on the
Augusta areaeconomy is over 180
jobs with a payroll of over $3
million. The Existing Industry
Committee of the Augusta Metro
Chamber of Commerce nominated
thermal Ceramics for this award.
