Parentswhowant toensurethat
their children do not lose valu
able school skills over the sum
mer should encourage their
youngsters to read.
Regular summer reading
doesn’t have to be regarded a s
schoolwork. It can be a pleasur
~able activity that keeps reading
ability sharp and prevents skills
from backsliding.
Aiken Technical College Read
ing Coordinator Susann Deason
offered the following tips to help
parentsin encouraging their chil
dren to read over summer vaca
tion:
*Visit The Library. Try to make
each triptothelibrary an exciting
adventure of discovery. Let each
child in your family havealibrary
card. Encourage your child to
check out at least one book during
each visit.
* Set up a Personal Library for
Your Child at Home. This can be
as simple as a cardboard box or a
child’s own space on the family
bookshelf. A tripto the bookstore
where the child can purchase a
book for his own library may be
Jjust the thing tospark an interest
in reading.
*Read to Your Child. Try to set
Iside time every day for reading
;0 your child. This positive expe
cience can provoke a curiosity
about books and arouse a desire
.0 read well.
* Provide Time for Children to
lead. Set aside time when the
=levision and radio are turned
T, and the whole family reads.
hildren tend to imitate their
arents. Children who see their
arents reading are more likely
» view reading as a worthwhile
ctivity.
