Something fishy in the Bushes
. On this past Sunday, I went to
“church and ran into my idol. My
idolis a little boy whom I respect
- fully call Mr. President. Heis a
bright, articulate African-Ameri
can male who is approximately
seven years old. When he met me
“in the hall we began to talk poli
tics as we often do. I said, “Mr.
~ President, youdidn’t get elected,
~ what happened?” He replied,
“Rev. Watkins, you know what is
happeningin Florida don’t you?”
I looked puzzled. He continued,
_ “Youknow George Bush’sbrother
- deb is stealing those electrical
" votes and giving them to his
brother.” I said, “electrical,” he
said, “yea, he is stealing those
. electrical votes and giving them
*to his brother.” I chuckled, and
then I began to ponder how sad it
- was that this child witnessed
America at its worst.
This election has been a fiasco.
It has been confirmed. There is
something fishy in the Bushes.
To put it simply, the situation in
- Florida stinks. It reeks of old

on Nader’s behalf. Theresult was
an “11th hour” appearance by
Nader the day before the election
at a Harlem meeting hosted by
Sharpton.
Though it’s a severe case of too
little, very late, a point has none
theless been made. Insofar as the
Nader campaign has succeeded in
drawing large-scale participation
by the left into the independent
political movement, the necessity

time political corruption. The
good old boys are still in business.
The Bush boys set out to do just
what they are doing. They in
tended to steal this election from
the start.
African Americans turned out
in record numbers and the Bush
boys attempt to nullify our par
ticipation by undermining the
election via dirty politics. How
can you lose thousands of ballots?
How do you design a ballot that is
so confusing that 19,000 people
makemistakes casting their vote?
How do you throw out another
20,000 votes in a heavily Demo
cratic county? How can George
W. Bush be leading by approxi
mately 1,500 in one count and
of connecting with Black America
is all the more urgent. It’s one
thing for the center-right George
Bushsupporter Ross Perot toturn
down my overture to campaign in
Harlem (though he shouldn’t
have!) It’s quite another for Ralph
Nader, left-winger and self-de
scribed catalyst for a new pro
gressive movement to turn me
down.
And what of Rev. Sharpton? He
helped me put the heat on Nader.
He told the Black community it
needed to broaden its political
options. He instructed, “I will not -
compromise my self-respect. It is
bad enough for them to
marginalize us. It is worse for us

then one day later be leading by
only 300 votes, and they are count
ing the same ballots? My little
friend at church knew what hap
pened in Florida!
The Bush Family has been con
sistent. They haveignored usand
now they have stepped as low as
the fathers of Jim Crow, they have
effectively violated the people’s
rights. George W. Bush pro
claimed that he would bring dig
nity back to the White House,
well if this is his idea of dignity,
give me Bill Clinton for another
four years. This election stinks of
crime, corruption, and it looks
like we may have another Repub
lican thief in the White House.
You doremember Richard Nixon.
He also stole an election.
What is that smell over in the
Bushes?
