. Producer Robert Teitel, who be
friended Tillman while they both
attended Columbia Collegein Chi
cago, agreed that “thiswasahard,
“hard film to make.”
“I think George sometimes saw
‘himselfasacharacterinit,” Teitel
'said. “He had to overcome and
accomplish all sorts of things to
get it made.”
Oneobstacle was that thebudget
required all the actors to work for
smaller salaries.
“Cuba took a pay cut. De Niro
took a pay cut. I almost did it for
free,” said Tillman.
Gooding acknowledged that he
was “very frustrated” with the sal
ary, “and at one point in the nego
tiations I dropped out of it. I #aid,
‘T'm not doing this movie. They
don’t have a proper budget. They
don’t respect me.’
“Then De Niro called me up to
cuss meout. Hemade alot of sense.
He said, ‘You don’t fight racism
this way.” And he was right. You
makethemovieandyoushow them.
The studios have broken it down to
a number system on paper, and
(black films) are at a bit of a disad
vantage. But you change that with
box office and by making films that
make a profit.”
Butthebigger problem was orga
nizing the story — which tracks
Brashear’s life from his youth on
the farm; his battle with racism
during naval training and as he
rose through the ranks; and the
tragic event that almost cut his
career short.

In the process, facts were altered
and composite characters created
for dramatic effect.
De Niro’s character of Billy Sun
day, a redneck training officer who
later becomes Brashear’sadvocate,
actually was two different meg at
two different times.
In thefilm, white divers refuse to
bunk with Brashear; in fact, he
spent only one night alone.
Conversely, a scene in which his
tools are scattered underwater ac
tually happened “quite frequently,”
said Brashear, “although I don’t
know if (it was) purposely.”
And thecourtroom scenein which
Brashear is given a superhuman
task to perform “doesn’t begin to
scratch thesurface,” said Brashear.
“I had to do it five times.”
The story appealed to Tillman
partly because of the swagger and
machismo of this way oflife. Tillman
alsowasdrawn tothestorybecause
“Thaven’tseen agreat divingmovie
since ‘(Beneath the) 12-Mile Reef.””
But first he had to take swim
ming classes to conquer his own
fear of water.
Brashear’s “story was about not
giving up on your dreams and ac
complishing what you wanted to
accomplish,” Tillman said. “To do
that I had to get down in the water
and get comfortable.”
The practical reason, of course,
was that Tillman would be filming
on the water.
“Everyone was afraid the water
was going to kick our ass,” said
Tillman.
The issue was particularly sensi
tive, said producer Teitel, because
“we were working with the studio
(Fox) that made ‘Titanic.” They
