Augusta Symphony names
winner of youth competition
T{ie Symphony Youth Competi
tionsin Piano was held at the ASU
¥iné Arts Building on November
12, 2000. Four area piano stu
dents participated in the competi
tion, Sponsored by the Augusta
Syniphony and the Augusta Sym
phony Guild, this competition was
oped-to students in the CSRA.
The winner of the competition
will be afeatured performer at the
January 14, 2001 Publix Family
Concert, “Keyboard Magic,” with
Jerome Lowenthal.
The winner of this year’s com
petition was Ms. Susan Zhang of
Augusta. Susan is 12 years old
and: attends seventh grade at
Davidson Fine Arts School. Sheis
the daughter of Xunsheng Chen

DFCS asks public to contribute to state’s Secret Santa program
Thousands of Georgia children
in foster care depend on caring
members of the public for the
Christmas gifts they dream of,
through “Secret Santa,” a pro
gram coordinated by the Georgia
Department of Human Resources
Division of Family and Children
Services (DFCS). More contribu
tions are needed by the December
15 deadline.

Catherine is 14 years old and at
tends eighth grade at Episcopal
Day School. She is the daughter
of Dr. and Mrs. David booker. Lee
is a student of Denver Oldham.
The competition was judged by
Dr. Donald Portnoy, music direc
tor for the Augusta Symphony,
and pianist Richard Ormrod, guest
artist for the Symphony’s Master
works’ Nov. 11 concert. For fur

“Clark Howard of WSB Radio
has provided enthusiastic support
and acquired the support of many
radio listeners across Atlanta,”
says Walker.
Howard conducts six remote
radio broadcasts from stores in
the Atlanta area each December.
This year he will be broadcasting
from Target stores to urge shop
pers to buy a gift for children in
foster care. Some corporate spon
sors collect gifts and money for
Secret Santa from their employ
ees, but'most of the contributions
arefromindividuals. Local DFCS
staff volunteer to collect the gifts
from donors and see that they are

Dr. Ethel Taylor to
speak at Voorhees College

Dr. Ethel Taylor, a noted pro
fessor of English at North Caro
lina A&T University, will ad
dress the Voorhees College com
munity at an assembly, Thurs
day, November 30, 2000 at 11
a.m. in Massachusetts Hall.
Dr. Taylor is a graduate of
Spelman College, Atlanta Uni
versity and Indiana University.
She has been the recipient of
numerous awards and fellow
ships and is listed in Personali
ties of the South, the Dictionary
of International Biography, and
Who’s Who in the South and
Southwest. She is the author
and co-author of several pub
lished works and has served on
various boards and committees
including: The Ron McNair and
Martin Luther King Jr. Memo
rial Committee; the HBCU Re-
delivered to each child’s foster
parents.
Over 12,000 children are in fos
ter care in Georgia, because they
have suffered the loss of a parent
or have experienced neglect or
abuse. More than 600 children
still need their wish list filled. Of
these, 196 arelocated in Muscogee

Playhouse raffle to benefit
abused and neglected children
The Augusta Child Advocates,
Inc. hasset upa Children’s Christ
mas Village on the campus of Au
gusta State University. Thegrand
opening will be held on Thursday,
November 30, at 6 p.m. Two 6' x
B'custom-build playhouses will be
raffled off and delivered to the
winners before Christmas. The
Christmas Village will be open to
the public from November 30
through December 16.
CBC joins in Bi-Lo Boosters program
Childcare By Choice (CBC) has
been added to the growing list of
non-profit organizations who par
ticipate in the Bi-Lo Boosters pro
gram.
The Bi-Lo Boosters is a
fundraising program that allows a
