Ten strategies for
preserving your wealth
5. Gift Away What You
Don’t Need. Lifetime gifts to
family members or others can
reduce your assets and subse
quent estate tax liability, and
may also shelter appreciation
onthoseassetsfrom estate taxa
tion. You are entitled to trans
fer up to slo, ooo° per person
eachyear withoutincurringany
gift tax or reducing your appli
cable exclusion amount.
Spouses together may giftupto
$20,000 per person. Additional
gifts made directly to educa
tional institutions for tuition
or tomedical providers arealso
excluded from gift tax.
Gifts to qualified charities
may be exempt from gift tax.
The value of the charitable do
nations, including financial as
sets such as stocks, artwork,
real estate and certain busi
ness interests, and any future
appreciation of those assets,
reduces the value of your es
tate. These charitable dona
tions may qualify for current
income-tax deductions.
6.Keep Enough Assets Liq
uid to Satisfy Estate Taxes.

Generally, thelßSrequiresthat
any federal estate tax liability
besatisfied within ninemonths
of the date of death, and that
paymentmustbeincash. There
are four typical sources from
which funds can be obtained:
cash reserves, loans, and liqui
dation of assets or life insur
ance proceeds. If properly
owned bya trust or third party,
life insurance proceeds may be
especially advantageous; they
are income tax free to the re
cipientand avoid estate tax. Be
sure your heirs aren’t forced to
sell investments at the wrong
time because of a shortage of
liquid funds.
7. Have a Trustee of an
Irrevocable Trust Purchase
Your Insurance Policy. Usu
ally, life insurance proceeds
avoid probate and are exempt
fromincometax. However, the
proceeds will be subject to es
tate tax if you own or have
rights in the policy. Purchas
ing the policy within an irrevo
cable trust may prevent life in
surance proceeds fromincreas
ingyourestatetaxliability. You
may also elect to have a third
party, such as an adult child,
purchase the policy.
8. Know What You Have
and Where You Havelt. Your
estate plan should make sense
and be sensible. Don’t “out
smart” yourself. Remember to
balance your tax concerns with
your non-tax concerns. Keep
copies of your important pa
persand make sure that appro
priateparties know wherethese
papers are kept.
9. Choose Executors and
Trustees Wisely. Selecting
one family member amongsev
eral may create unforeseen
problems down the road. You
