Major Broadcasting Cable Network (MBC Net
work) recently launched in Atlanta, Georgia as
part of AT&T Broadband’s Family Variety Bo
nus Category. The Atlanta launch of January
30th was instrumental to America’s first, fully
owned and operated, African American, family
oriented network. Because of the large number
of cable subscribers in the Atlanta area, MBC
Network will now have a viewing audience of
over 5 million with the success of the launch.
After the top-rated radio morning show in
Atlanta (The Frank Ski Morning Show) inter
viewed Marlon Jackson on the network’s launch
day, the switchboards of MBC Network lit up
with calls inquiring about the network. The
throngofcallsfromlisteners only validated what
MBC principles, noted attorney and philanthro
pist, Willie E. Gary; heavy-weight champion,
Evander Holyfield; all-star baseball great, Cecil
Fielder; entertainment legend, Marlon D. Jack
son and founder and broadcast veteran Alvin D.
James already knew when they first embarked
on this worthwhile journey. The need and com
mitment to provide quality family programming
that excludes sex and violence from its program
ming is a welcomed change to viewers.
According to CEO and Chairman Gary, “In a
report recently released by the Kaiser Family
Foundation on ‘Sex on TV: Content and Con
text’, there is more sex on TV today than there
was two years ago and only one in ten of the sex
scenes being presented contains any type of
reference to safe sex. Thisis what MBC Network
is campaigning against in programming; we are
presenting morally responsibletelevision tofami
lies. MBC Network, is about real families and
real family television.”
Last year, as part of the network’s commit
ment to excellence, Gary, Holyfield and Fielder
purchased what is now Atlanta GHF/Artisan
Picture Works Studio, corporate headquarters
of MBC Network.
On Monday, March 12th MBC Network will
open its doors to local government, social and
civic community leaders for an “open house.”
The evening’s agenda will begin with a press
conference and a proclamation by the Honor
able Mayor Campbell of Atlanta announcing
March 12th as “Family Television Day,” to be
followed by live entertainment, food and walk
through tours of the studio. The showcasing of
the impressive multi-million dollar facility will
provide the community with the opportunity to
view the more streamlined operation first hand.
The GHF/Artisan acquisition has enabled the
network to be more cost efficient in the manag
ing of daily productions, coupled with the oppor
tunity to continue to produce quality, sports,
entertainment and news programming.
The new production facility has also allowed
the network the opportunity to expand in other
areas of production such as the first live broad
cast in the new facilities with the Princeville
2000 Telethon last September.
