Poet Haki Madhubuti visits Paine College

+» Haki Madhubuti, gifted poet
and essayist, recently served
as keynote speaker during
Paine College’s Assembly Pro
gram on Wednesday, Febru
ary 14,2001. Formerly known
as Don L. Lee, Mr. Madhubuti
gave a talk on his experiernces
as a yong black man growing
up without a mother or fa
ther, whobecame empowered
throughhistalents asawriter
and recited some of his po
etry. He also met with alumni
and students in small groups
and lectured in classrooms.
His nineteen publications in
clude, Don’t Cry, Scream, We
walk the Way of the World,
and Book of Life. He is the
founder and president of Third
World Press located in Chi
cago, Illinois.
Paine College hosts its first annual masked
ball at the newly renovated Candler Building
- On Friday, February 9th,
Paine College hosted its First
Annual Masked Ball in the
beautiful ball room of the
newly renovated Candler Me
morial Library Building. Two
hundred beautifully dressed
and masked guest participated
in the gala affair. Guests were
tequired to go and on a “Food
4and Building Tour” in order to
sample delicious food which
was located in various rooms
in the building. A highlight of
the evening was the “Parade
of Masks” duringwith masked
guests paraded before a pannel
of judges in competition for
prizes.

Distingguished Leadership
Award; Mrs. Ruth Crawford,
The Distiguished Community
Service Award; Mrs. Thelma

Educator Award; and Dr.
Venola Lee Hill, The
Distiguished Support Awrd.
Mr. Sam Burston, the Atlanta
Area Director for UNCF, was
presented with the Paine Col
lege Lion Award. Board Chair
Attorney Robert Bell said,

The ballroom at Candler,
illuminated by three glisten
ing chandeliers and enhanced
by towering containers of flow-
ers provided an elegant set
ting for the affair. The music
provided by Dr. Sandra Can
non Scott Mr. Joseph Collier
and Mr. Judd Picket kept ev
erybody in a joyful mood.
Judging from the mood of
the crowd, next year’s event
will be a sellout. Paine
College’s Second Annual
Masked Ball was held during
Homecoming on Friday, Feb
ruary 8, 2002.
Augustan to represent Georgia in National Pageant
Crystal Riversof Augusta,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Alton Jones, was recently
selected asMs. Georgia 2001.
She will represent Georgia,
as she advances to the 2001
Ms. American United States
National Pageant, July 18-
21 at the Rosen Center Ho
tel in Orlando, Florida. She
will compete with other state
delegatesfrom all acrossthe
United States, for s2o,oooin
cash and the title of Ms.
American United States
2001.
Ms. Rivers is a Case Man
agement Coordinator. She
is a 1992 graduate of Glenn
Hills High School and a 1997
graduate of the State Uni
versity of West Georgia. She

program in honor of an un

Frank Wills.
Rev. Clarence Hill is pastor
of this church. The program
was well formulated and car
ried out to the letter. The
music by the various church
groups was superb.
Rev. Marvin Mcßae intro
duced the speaker of the hour,
the Honorable Sen. Charles
W. Walker (D-22). It so hap
pens, heisone of Rev. Mcßae’s
Sizemore elected to executive committee
The Augusta Metro Cham
ber of Commerce is pleased to
announce the election of Ms.
Charlene P. Sizemore to its
Executive Committee.
Charlene will serve as Trea
surer for the Chamberin 2001.

It is hard to be a black man
in America; we are living too
fast and dying too fast. The
brain does not have a border.
We need to pay more atten
tion to our children.
Sen. Walker talked about
how hard it was with his fam
ily and that his father was his
hero. We stand on the shoul
ders of our fathers, and we
owe so much to those who
have walked ahead and car
ried the lamp of freedom for
us.
After the benediction, the
minister led those in atten
dance to the church cemetery
to the monument erected for
Frank Wills.

decision by the Board of Di
rectors and commented that,
“Charlene hascontinually and
consistently worked hard to
promote economic and com
munity development in Au
gusta. I look forward to work
ing with her in her new role of
Treasurer and herleadership
in 2004.”
