Paine gains from the Tom Joyner Foundation

an experience. In fact, you
had to be there to believe it.
The Tom Joyner “Sky Show”
live radio program consisted
of four hours of fun and frolic
and provided arecord number
of scholarship awards for se
lected students at Paine Col
lege.
A cross section of the Au
gusta-CSRA community was
lined up at the Bell Audito
iium at 4:30 a.m., waiting to
get a seat when the doors
opened at 5:00 a.m. Tome
Joyner, Miss Dupree, J. An
thony Brown, Cybil, Myra J.
and company came on stage
dancing, singing, and telling
jokes and keeping it up for
hours. The audience danced
and sand with “Cameo” who
performed their hits through
out the morning. And, all the
while, Paine College alumni,
Paine’s President Dr. Shirley
A.R.Lewis, and corporate sup
porters stepped on stage and
presented awards to the Tom
Joyner Foundation for Paine
Presenters included Mr.
Roscoe Brown of Coca Cola;
Mrs. Lessie Price, Dr. Joe
Buggy, and Mr. Clinton L.
McCalla of Westinghouse;
Mrs. Dee Crawford of
McDonald’s, Mr. Harold
Petteway of Procter and
VICA region 6
competitions
Northal Gaddy II of Evans
High School camein first place
in the Architectural Drafting
section of the region 6 VICA
competitionsin Milledgeville,
Georgia. Northal is a senior
at Evans High School and is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Northal
“Not” Gaddy of Martinez. He
is now scheduled to compete
in the state competitions.
Top Lady
attends board
meeting
Dr. Yvonne Shaw, first vice
president of Top Ladies of Dis
tinction, Inc., Augusta chap
ter, represented the chapter
at the Administrative Board
Meeting held at the Hilton
North and Towers Hotel in
Austin, Texas. This board
(Parliament-Top, 2000) is the
governing body of Top Ladies
of Distinction, Inc., and con
sists of the founders, elected
and appointed national offic
ers, past national presidents,
representatives from each
area and national standing
committee chairpersons.
The session involved stra
tegic planning of the year’s
activities, including the na
tional convention (Syn-Lod
2001), national committees,
national projects, national
scholarship program,and Top
Teens of America.
The national convention
(Syn-Lod 2001) will be held in
Houston, Texas June 25 -July
1, 2001. The theme for this
conventionis: “Soaringto New
Heights... Fulfilling the
Dream.”

chapter.
Women of
Excellence
Awards coming
The 2001 Women of Excel
lence Awards will take place
the evening of Thursday, May
17, at the Augusta Country
Club. The program is spon
sored by Girl Scouts, Central
Savannah River Council to
honor outstanding women in
the areas of arts, community
service, education, health,
government and professions.
Women of Excellence nomi
nation forms are available at
the Girl Scout service center
located at 1325 Greene Street,
Augusta, next to the Sacred
Heart Cultural Center, or at
your local public library.

Tom Joyner announced the
names of Paine students who
received scholarshipsranging
from SI,OOO to $3,000. Paine
students in the audience
shouted and jumped for joy as
their names were called.
Throughout the month of
February, Paine students will
continue to receive scholar
ships. The names of some stu
dents are being announced
and their biographies are still
being read during the daily
broadcast. These awards are
provided by General Millsand
Daimler Chrysler. Donors
may also contribute in March
2001, but they must be sureto
mark their checks “for Paine
College.”
Paine’s alumni have enthu
siastically supported the
Joyner Campaign. At this
printing, alumni had given
over $30,000. Todate, the cam
paign hasraised over SBO,OOO
in scholarships for Paine. Ac
cording to Peggy Tanksley,
Executive Director of Alumni
Relations, “Alumni gifts con
tinuetoarrive.” President Dr.
Shirley A. R. Lewis stated,
“We are grateful to Tom
Joyner for his dedication to
Paine College and our sister

Johnny Hatney, President of
the Augusta Alumni Chapter
stated, “Its important for
Alumni to continue to give
their financial support to the
Tom Joyner Foundation for
Paine College during the
month of February and
throughout the year. Their
giving in turn gives students
an opportunity to receive a
quality education at Paine
College. Paine’s students are
benefitting one hundred per
cent from the efforts of the
Tom Joyner Foundation. The
Tom Joyner Foundation is a
vital source for scholarships
and students at Paine College
are benefitting one hundred
percent.” Mrs. Ruth Crawford
presented a check for $5,000
from the Paine College Na
tional Alumni Association at
the “Sky Show.” She also did
some dancing with Miss
Dupree. Mrs. Crawford
stated, “To be an alumnus of
Paine and having a chance to
dance with Myra J. was just
exhilarating. It carried me
back to the time when I was a
student. I had a wonderful
time. I simply enjoyed the
occasion, and The Tom Joyner
Show is one of the greatest
things that could ever happen
to Paine College. This year
we have the opportunity to
increaseour giving. Paineites
need to continue to rally
around their alma mater.”
Other Paineites who pre
sented were Mr. Juriah Lewis,
Mrs. Thelma Williams, Mrs.
Magnolia Donahue, Dr.
Justine Washington, Dr.
Margie Waters for Paine’s
Division of Education,and Mr.
Charles Mathis. Donations
were sent by out-of-towners
Mr. David Peterson and Dr.
Venola Lee Hill.
The Tom Joyner Founda
tion will raise funds for Paine
College throughout the month
of February. Donors may con
tinue to give through March
2001. Through the generosity
of McDonald’s, the Joyner
Foundation will match gifts
for Paine. Persons interested
in making a donation may
