Dr. Marshall Bass, chairman of the Voorhees Col
lege Board of Trustees, recently announced the re
tirement of Dr. Leonard E. Dawson, president of the
college, effective June 30, 2001.
Said Dr. Bass, “During the past 16 years, Dr.
Dawson has served with unparalleled and incompa
rable distinction as president of Voorhees during a
time of unprecedented recovery and progress. After
his distinguished tenure in office, he feels that he
must rejoin his lovely and devoted wife in Richmond,
Virginia.”
Several major accomplishments occurred during
Dr. Dawson’s tenure:
- A troublesome deficit of $1.5 million was erased;
- Enrollment at the college doubled;
- The endowment tripled from $2.3 million to $7.5
million; ’
- The annual budget has increased five fold;
- The budget has been balanced for 16 consecutive
years;
- $lO million of debt-free construction was erected
on the campus and another $5 million has been
devoted to renovation of existing buildings;
- New academic programs were added including
concentrations in computer science and geographic
information systems;
- A new degree program in organizational manage
ment was added for non-traditional students;
- The Division of Business was accredited by the
Association of Business Schools;
- Community based programs including job devel
opment and affordable housing acquisition were ini
tialed through the establishment of a Community
Development Corporation.
Under Dr. Dawson’s leadership Voorhees also re
ceived two national awards -the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development’s Best Practice
Award for Project SMARTS, the College’s Single
Parent Program; and the John H. Templeton Foun
dation Award presented to Best Character Building
Colleges in the United States.
“We al owe Dr. Dawson a great debt of gratitude
and we wish him Godspeed,” added Dr. Bass. “On
behalf of the Board of Trustees, the faculty and staff
of Voorhees College, we express our genuine and
heartfelt thanks to Dr. Dawson for his dedicated,
unselfish and inspirational leadership during these
challenging years. When he arrived, Voorhees was a
troubled institution. His exceptional skills as a
manager and his ability to motivate and guide the
faculty and staffhave brought the college into the 21
century prepared to meet its responsibilities and
obligations to the aspiring students of South Carolina
and the nation.”
