Born to Read Literacy Center
will hold free tutoring during the fall
from Monday througn Friday from 4
to 8 p.m.,, closed on Wednesdays.
Receive one-on-one tutoring for all
ages under the supervision of a certi
fied teacher. There will be a free
membership into the Metro Adult
Literacy Council with a $lO supply
fee. For registration information,

hold its 6* Annual Harvest Ball at
the Julian Smith Casino on Sat.,
Nov. 3, from 7 to 11 p.m. S2O per
person. A sit down dinner will begin

Augusta Ballet will present
“Dracula” on Oct. 12 and 13 at the
Imperial Theatre, 749 Broad St. Oct.
12show willbeat 8 p.m., and the Oct.
13 shows will be 3 and 8 p.m. The
Augusta Ballet’s tongue-in-cheek
“Dracula” transports the Bram
Stoker classic to the Roaring Twen
ties, whereit gets the full silent movie
treatment, complete with on-screen
titles accorapanied by gothic music.
More often, though, Dracula uses
1920 s pop songs like “My Blue
Heaven” and “Makin’ Whoopee” to
emphasize the fun. For tickets or

Oktoberfest will be held Oct. 13-
14, non to 10 p.m. on Sat., noon to 6
p.m. on Sun., at the Riverwalk. It
will feature musical entertainment,
dance, merchandise and authentic

Fall 2001 Film Series will be held
Mondays in the Butler Hall lecture
room at 6 and 8:30 p.m. showings.

Paradiso. Directed by Guiseppe
Tornatore, 1989, 123 min., Italy.

small Italian town where a youngboy
is mesmerized with a movie theater
and strikes up a dynamic friendship
with its warmhearted projectionist.
Phinizy Swamp/Nature Park,
Just minutes from downtown Augus
ta. Staffand volunteers of the South
eastern Nature Sciences Academy can
point out areas of interest as you
walk on trails and paths throughout
the Nature Park. Come prepared
with seasonal items such as insect
repellent, and sunscreen, comfort
able walking shoes, a water bottle
and weather-appropriate outerwear.
Cameras and binoculars are optional
but welcome. Guests are welcome to
enjoy these respurces from dawn to
dusk on Saturdaysand Sundays, from
noon to 8 p.m. on weekdays. Groups
of 10 or more individuals must sched
ule visits in advance by calling (706)
826-2109 and will be charged a fee.
Visit the park for “Family Dinner @
Phinizy Swamp Nature Park” on
Thurs., Oct. 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
Bring the family and a pre-cooked
dinner to the park’s Picnic Pavilion
while enjoying an evening in nature.
The Pavilion will be open for dinner
at 6 p.m., with the program begin
ning at 6:30 p.m. This month’s topic
will be “Turtles.” Free of charge, no
advance reservations needed.
Regal 20 will be featuring the
upcoming new foreign, independent
and low budget films. The Closet is
from France and was directed by the
famed comic writer/director during
the last three decades, Francis Veber,
best known for The Tall Blonde Man
With One Red Shoe. The film will
open in Augusta on Oct. 19. 7The
Closet stars Gerard Depardieu and
Daniel Auteuil, two of France’s most
accomplished actors. The film is
about the lengths that we will go in
order to improve others’ perception
of us — even if it means lying about
our sexual proclivities. Greenfingers
was inspired by Paula Deitz’s 1998
New York Times article “Free to
Grow Bluebells in England” which
focused on the real-life gardening ex
ploits of British prisoners. The ar
ticleserved as the inspiration for this
fictional tale about finding beauty in
the most unlikely of places. The film
stars the English actress Helen
Mirren. Greenfingers will open on
Oct. 26.
The Hispanic Festival will be
held Oct. 19-21 at the Riverwalk.

festival will have exciting musical
entertainment, arts/crafts from sev
eral countries and dancing in the
