Rowing trials
return to
Augusta
The Augusta Rowing Clubis
honored to announce that the
Fifth Annual Head of the
South Rowing Regatta, better
known as the H.0.T.5., will
feature over 5,000 of the best
rowers from around the world
competing on the Savannah
River on Saturday, October
13, 2001. Races begin 8:15
a.m. and run throughout the
day.
H.O.T.S. continuestobethe
fastest growing regatta in the
country. Again this year, the
H.O.T.S. features the Media
Challenge Cup race that pits
three Augusta-area mediaout
lets competing for bragging
rights.
The H.O.T.S. race is rowed
downstream over a three-mile
course. Head races usually
take place in the fall and early
winter. Popular the world
over, they were developed to
encourage crews to train hard
by providing a taste of compe
tition that they would other
wise not experience until the
sprint races in the spring and
summer.
Compared with a 1,000 to
2,000 meter sprint race, head
races are an average of 5,000
meters. There are no lanes —
only boundaries—onacourse
that has multiple turns and
obstacles. The start of a head
race is processional with five
second intervals essentially
making a head race a time
trial.
Admission to the H.O.T.S.
isfree. The Augusta Riverfront
Marina at the Boathouse is
located on Prep Phillips Drive.
