served dinner to over 100 vol
unteers from area churches
and organizations. The din
ner wasin appreciation of vol
unteers who, for eighteen

Mary Bannan, certified reg

MCG Health Care, spent last
week working in the midst of
the greatest tragedy to occur
on United States soil. She
was assisting in the relief ef
forts at the World Trade Cen
ter in New York as part of the
Georgia Disaster Medical As
sistance Team.
Ms. Bannan’s seven-day de
ployment included an eight
hour shift from 4 p.m. to mid
night each day. Medical per
sonnel treated firefighters,
police officers and other relief
workers who were injured in
recovery efforts. Ms. Bannan
will share stories about car
ing for those in medical need
and how the tragedy impacts
those who are there to help.
“Thiswas atruly life-chang
ingevent. Iwasoverwhelmed
by all the support from across
the country and around the
world,” said Ms. Bannan. Re
lief workers received thank
youletters from children. She
has brought a couple of letters
home to write back to those
children.

The Food Volunteers Pro
gram started in 1983 with
eleven churches participating
by providing hot meals daily
to families of burn patients.
Today, 48 churches and civic
hematology and oncology at

and physician-scientist with a
special interest in new ge
netictreatments for advanced
prostate cancer. He led the
world’s first human gene
therapy for prostate cancer.

Following dinner, the pro
gram featured a burn family
survivor story by the mother
General Hospital of Harvard
Medical School followed by a
clinical fellowship in medical
oncology and a postdoctoral
fellowship in molecular ge
netics at The Johns Hopkins
Oncology Center. He joined
the faculty of Johns Hopkins
in 1990 and moved to Emory
University in 2000.
