Willie Gary
began airing in April, result
ing in an exceptional amount
ofindividual exposure for the
HBCUs, equivalent to $1 mil
lion in paid advertising. Most
schools already receive na
tional broadcast promotion
through commercials that air
in conjunction with the United
Negro College Fund (UNCF)
or on local or regioral sta-
tions. With the MCB
Network’s new plan, HBCUs
will be able to showcase their
schools to new markets. The
program hasreceived support
from respected social activist
and nationally svndicated ra
dio personality Thomas “The
Fly Jock” Joyner and the Tom
Joyner Foundation. Over the
years, the foundation has
raised millions of dollars for
HBCUs and continues to be
one of the largest contribu
tors to the institutions.
“Our ‘Salute to Black Col
leges’ program is designed to
work in conjunction with ex
isting university programs,
with MBC Network providing
anotheravenue for additional
exposure,” said Mr. Gary, a
Shaw alumnus. “We have
consistently proven our com
mitment by supporting these
educational legacies through
scholarshipdonations, intern
ships programs and by being
the only network to carry live
black college sports.”
