regional look at art
Demonstrating the talent of
the men and women training
the next generation of artists,
the South Carolina State Mu
seum is presenting the 4'
Annual Southeastern College
Art Conference (SECAC)
Members Juried Exhibition
which began October 19.
The show features 35 works
by 18 college art teachers from
across theregion. Teachingis
one of the most creative envi
ronments for artists, says
Robin Waites, chief curator of
art and juror of the exhibit.
Teachersare constantly work
ing with young people and dis
cussing intellectual and tech
nical issues. “It really feeds
the artistic soul,” she says.
Theart is contemporary and
spans many media: painting,
installation, sculpture, pho
tography and digital drawing.
One thing Waites finds in
teresting about the sculpture
is the many different ways in
which: metal is used. “Some
artists use ti to emphasize the
strength ofthe medium. Some
use it so you wouldn’t even
recognize it as metal,” she
says.
