Norwood Capitol Hill office
remains closed until next week
WASHINGTON
The Washington office of
U.S. Representative Charlie
Norwood (R-GA) will remain
closed until next week at the
earliest, due to the ongoing
mvestigation and remediation
efforts concerning anthrax
contamiration in the
Longworth House Office
building. However, Norwood
says the temporary closure of
the Washington facility has
no bearingon constituent ser
vicesin Georgia, oron legisla
tive effectiveness during the
final weeks of this year’s ses
sion of Congress.
Tenth District offices is Au
gusta, Dublin, and
Milledgeville remain open
under normal operating
schedules, while Washington
office staff members continue
toworkin alternatelocations.
No Washington staff mem
bers have been confirmed as
having been exposed to an

House Leadership an
nounced late Friday night that
anthrax spores had been de

to that of Norwood’s 7t floor
office. Earlier today (Satur

The Centers for Disease
Control has recommended
medical treatment only for
staff and visitors of the three
offices in which anthrax was
detected, who were in those
specific offices between Octo
ber 12 and October 17. Cur
rent treatment consists of
medical evaluation, usually
followed by prophylactic anti
biotics. The specificoffices are

The Longworth Buildinghas
remained closed since Octo
ber 17, when House Speaker
Dennis Hastert (R-IL)ordered
all House Office Buildings
closed for inspection after a
letter containing anthrax was
opened in the office of Senate
Majority Leader Tom Daschle
(D-SD). 28 Daschle staff mem
bers and five Capito! Police
Officers were confirmed as
exposed to the spores follow
ing the incident.
Theinspection ofthe House

spores in the Ford House Of

the basement mailroom
where mail for the Longworth
Building is normally pro

findings, Longworth has re

similar amount of time, the
building is likely to remain
closed through next week.
“The important thing for
folks in Georgia’s Tenth Dis
trict to realize is that while
the Longworth Building
proper is closed, their con
gressional offices are NOT
closed, and never have been,”
says Norwood. “We have four
offices open to the public, and

by this anthrax business. All
the others are open for busi
ness on their normal sched

ington office remains on the
jobinalternate locations. The
people’s business is being
done, and will continue to be
done, regardless of these or
future inconveniences.”
Staffmembers displaced by
the closures had been relo
cated in the nearby offices of
the General Accounting Of
fice (GAO), or are using other
alternate office locations in
the Greater Washington, DC
area. All phone calls to the
Washington office are auto

Augusta District Ofiice.
Under the Governor’s
plans, states would remove
sales tax from certain items
sold over a designated pe

season. Participating states
would be reimbursed anylost
revenues by the federal gov

tax weekend.
