LU NCF offers college scholarships to
children of terrorist attack victims
FAIRFAX, Va.
The children of victims of
the September 11, 2001 terror
ist attacks will be eligible to
receive a full scholarship for a
college education at one of the
" United Negro College Fund'’s
(UNCF) 39 member colleges
and universities. Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani announced
the new program in a press
conference at the New York
Marriott Marquis Hotel on
October 25, 2001 saying, “The
UNCF and its memberinstitu
tions’ actions and generosity
have the potential to trans
form the lives of many inno
cent victims. They are giving
the power that only education
can bring.”
Thefirst threerecipientsare
UNCF students who lost a
parent or guardianin thetrag
edy. Tiffany and Yolanda
Smith, freshmen twins at
Johnson C. Smith University,
lost their father, Leon Smith
dr., a New York City
firefighter, Ladder Company
118, in the World Trade Cen
ter attack. Vernessa Richard,
a senior at Johnson C. Smith
University, lost her father, Lt.
Vernon Richard, a New York
City firefighter, Ladder Com
pany 7, in the World Trade
Center attack.
Scholarships will be offered
toany child, regardless of age,
who lost a parent or guardian,
as a result of these tragic
events. UNCF will not estab
lish a special fund for this
initiative. It is making this
commitment from the gener
ous support UNCF has re
ceived and will continue to
receive fromits donors. UNCF
was founded 57 years ago in
New York. Since that time,

people go to college. A large
portion of that support has
come from corporations, indi
vidualsand foundationsinthe
New York community.
UNCF’s 9-11 Scholarship
program will be based on the
following eligibility criteria:
-Student must be dependent
of a parent or guardian who
perished or was permanently
disabled in the September 11,
2001 tragic event.
- Student must be accepted
or enrolled full-time into one
of the 39 UNCF member col
leges or universities.

need and will cover the cost of
tuition, fees, room and board,
books and supplies.
