really operate this entire cen
ter. So I have done the best
that I could.”
Fryer said that it had been
left up to him to keep the books
and raise the money.
That night,inameetingthat
was closed to the public, the
board reinstated the executive
director, deciding that, what
ever harm he might havedone
to the records, he had done
even more good for the people
in the surrounding commu
nity.
Comments from attending
volunteers seem to bear that
out.
Mrs. Mattie C. Maddox, who
came to the center herselfasa
little girl, said New Hope had
never been as good as itis now,
in spite of what the board of
directors thinks. “They don’t
know Augusta needs this
man,” she said of Fryer. “I
pray that they do not remove
him, because he’sdone abeau
tiful job. I think he’s the best
director this center’s had. I'm
73yearsoldandIcame hereas
a little girl to programs and
different things. And the whole
neighborhood looks better.”
Volunteer Frances Ashley
agrees. “When Reverend Fryer
took over, this place had a
chair, atelephoneand adesk,”
she said.
Cynthia Utley Graham, the
godsister of board member
Arthur Smith, was passingout
pro-Fryer fliers and said she

petition asking that Fryer be
kept on as director.
Smith commented on com
munity response. “They
showed support for thiscenter
and reverend fryer. Its over
now until our next meeting,
the third Thursday of the
month. This was a special
called meeting. Urban Minis
tries thought they were going
to move in but they’re not
going to move in.
After the meeting, board
member Ken Echols, who had
been expressing dissatisfaction
over how the board was get
tingalong, seemed in good spir
its. “I think the board is be
glaningtocometogether.” He
felt confident that better busi
ness practices were right
around the corner.
“We’ll be fine,” he said.
Though the center has got
ten through this particular
controversy, it isnot out of the
woods. New Hope may be in
danger of closing its doors or,
at the very least, being forced
to move.
According to the audit, the
lease is up May 31, 2002. Glo
bal Ministries, who owns the
property on which the center
sits, are now faced with decid
ing if they want to renew the
lease. “At the present time,”
the audit states, “they have
serious concerns about the
operation of the facility. Fail
ure to address their concerns
may result in termination of
the lease.”
