Gras Marathon for diabetes to benefit ADA
Ellen Hinz, 45, of Martinez,
will represent the CSRA at
the Nokia Sugar Bowl “Mardi
GrasMarathon” tobenefitthe
American Diabetes Associa
tion on February 17, 2002 at
the Louisiana Superdome.
Hinz, who completed her first
marathonlast springin Rome,
Italy, also for diabetes, will
run 13.1 miles — along the
Mississippi River and through
the French Quarter — for the
cause.
Sponsored by her employer,
Doctors Hospital, and other
individuals, Hinzreached her
goal of $2,200, which covers
food and lodging and a dona
tion to the ADA. The
fundraiser, in its fifth year,
offers opportunities for people
to participate in a number of

on both mobile drives and

past week, blood donations
have fallen drastically while
hospital usage remains in

tion. Training under the di
rection of Kevin Long, ath
letic director at Augusta Pre
paratory Day School, Hinz
weight trains at least two
times per week, runs at least
one long run (seven miles or
more) per week and treadmill
runs at least five miles four to
five times per week. Long
will also participate in the
marathon, supporting Hinzas
she completes her 13.1 mile
goal.
Hinz’s post-marathon goal
is to.continue running for her
own health and for the health
ofher father and many others
who live with diabetes.
A former diabetes program
down to critically low levels.
Currently, all blood types are
needed, especially O+, A+and
B+. The public is asked to
respond immediately.
Anyone at least 17 years of
age and weighs at least 110
bounds, and has not donated
in the past eight weeks may
be eligible to donate.

worthwhile cause,” says Hinz.

Americans have diabetes and
four million of those don’t
know they have the disease.
