Samuel “Renaissance Man” Williams
The “Renaissance Man” is what
Samuel O. Williams is called by those
who know of his immense talents:
dancer, choreographer, actor, set de
signer, vocalist, author, sculptor and
painter. Mr. Williams will be exhibit
ing a mixed media collection of his
works at Studio ArtGro, 978 Broad
Street, from now through March 3,
2002.

Barrow-Dunlap, founder and president
of Faith Entertainment LLC, and di
rected by NAACP Image Award recipi
ent David Whitfield, “I Won'’t Be the
Other Woman” is a powerful presenta
tion with a riveting plot that will push
audiences to the edge of their seats.
The production revolves around Omar
and Lisa Davenport, a husband and wife
who areliving the life that most married
couples only dream about. The Daven
, ports both successful attorneys, spent
' the last 18 years building their empire
and raising their son. Having recently
sent their only son off to college, the
couple is anxious to turn their empty
nest into a love next.
Finally, they’re all alone until Omar’s
overbearing mother moves in. After 20
years, Mama still doesn’t feel that Lisais
Signal Corps Museum renames
Army art room in soldier’s honor
FORT GORDON, GA
The Army art room in the Signal Corps
Museum became the Percy Ricks Room in
a ceremony on January 25, 2002.
Mr. Ricks was drafted during the pre
war Army buildupin September 1941. He
entered the Army at Fort Benning, Ga. A
year later, after a variety of short assign
ments, Mr. Ricks was promoted to First
Sergeant. At 22, Ricks was one of the
youngest First Sergeants in contemporary
Army history.
« Mr. Ricks shipped overseas to Africa in
May 1943. He supervised his unit’s ship
ment of all classes of supplies to the U.S.
8% Army Air Corps. Asthe Alliesrolled the
Germans back across North Africa, Rick’s
transportation unit kept much needed sup
plies and materials moving to the advanc
ing front. Just as in Africa, the American
Army came to count on Mr. Ricks’ trans
portation unit’s ability to deliver supplies
where needed as the Allies started their
push up the Italian peninsula towards the
Austrian border and Germany beyond.
After VE Day, Mr. Ricks went home to
Georgia where he reenlisted, continuing
his service. He first served at Ft. Benning
and then Ft. Monmouth, N.J. While at
Monmouth in June 1946, at the age of 26

riage. Though an impossible choice to
make and a heart-wrenching crossroad to
face, Omar is torn between the woman
who is his wife and the woman who gave
him life. Without a doubt this‘is a very
volatile situation. However, Omar adds
fuel to the fire when in the midst of trying
to keep peacein hishome, he finds himself
in the arms of yet another woman.
“IWon’t Bethe Other Woman” boasts an
electric cast of colorful characters with
soulful singing and an engaging storyline.
The cast includes Charlie Wilson from The
Gap Band, the legendary Vanessa Bell
Armstrong, gospel sensation Wanda Nero
Butler, MCA gospel recording artists Pam
& Dodi, David Whitfield, Anthony “A.K.”
King, Victory Vaughn, BET Comic Views’s

with less than five years of service, Mr.
Ricks received the orders to the racially
mixed unit, the U.S. Army Photographic
Center in Long Island City, N.Y., which
was a Signal unit. He became the first
black non-commissioned officer of a ra
cially mixed unit. This happened two
years before President Truman’s execu
tiveorder ending segregation in the armed
forces. !
1* Sgt. Ricks retired from the Army in
1962 after 21 years of active service. He
continued to serve his nation with 15
additional years of civil service, finally
retiring in 1972.
Today, Ricksresidesin Augusta with his
wife of 45 years, Mildred. Mr. Ricksis the
father of five children: Charles, Mildred,
Diane, Anthony and Sharlene.
The Percy Ricks Room contains not only
Ricks’ uniform, but also Army art dating
back to World War 11. There is also an
Oscar the Signal Corps won in 1946 for the
documentary Seeds of Destiny.
The Signal Museum is free and open to
the public. It is in Conrad Hall, Building
29807, next to Signal Towers. The
museum’s hours of operation are Tuesday
through Friday, 8 am. to 4 p.m., and
Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed
