Professional money management: The
prescription for your financial health
As a successful physician,
the demands of your profes
sion leave you little time to
tend to your own needs. In
fact, your financial affairsare
probably oneofthefirstareas
to suffer for lack of personal
attention. And it’s no won
der: financial markets have
becomeincreasingly crowded
with new investment alterna
tivesthat areaccompanied by
varying degrees of complexity
and risk. Yet, many of these
new choices may represent
the potential for outstanding
opportunitiesthat youshould
consider to ensure the finan
cial wellbeingofyou andyour
family. Just as a patient’s
health is more secure in the
handsofaknowledgeableand
well-trained doctor, your
chances of investment suc
cesscan increasemeasurably
ifyou employ the servicesofa
professional money manager
with a proven track record.
Professional money man

hours assessing changes in
interest rates and market ac

and political developments,
analyzingcorporate financial
statements and even visiting
corporations in which they
intend toinvest. Theseactivi

that your wealth is invested
properly.
Your part in the invest

«,.Before making any long

you should understand the
risks and rewards associated
with investing. Market risk

volatility, the tendency of a
security’s returns to rise or
fall over a specific period of
time. Stocks, for example,
though potentially more re
warding, often contain more
market risk than bonds or
U.S. Treasury bills.
To help determine your
risk tolerance, ask yourself

Selectingaprofessional in
vestment management firm
When you retain a profes
sional money manager, you
grant the manager discretion,
or authority, to manage your
assets. If you had the time to
study all the available candi
dates to manage your money,
would you know what to look
for?
Because of the vast number
of professional money manage
ment services and styles avail
able, selecting the right profes
sional can bedifficult. Thechal
lenge, therefore, is to identify
the investment manager or
managers whose track record
and investment approach best
match your objectives and tol
erance for risk. While prior in
vestment performance is im
portant, it should not be the
sole criterion for evaluating a
money manager. To be com
fortable with thedecisionsyour
money manager makes, you
should consider the following:
® How long has the manage
ment firm been in business?
®Whatisthemanager’sstyle
of investing and what level of
risk can I expect?
B [s the manager registered
as an investment advisor with
AUGUSTA FOCUS
the Securities and Exchange
Commission or the appropri
atestateandregulatory agen
cies?
® What has the manager’s
performance been over the
pastone, threeand fiveyears
or longer if available?*
B Are the key investment
professionals responsible for
past performance still with
the firm today?
Amoneymanagement pro
gram does not end with the
selection of the money man
ager. You must have ameans
of measuringyourresults ver
sus your ohjectives and rela
tive benchmarks such as the
Standard & Poor’s 500 stock
index. In addition, periodic
reevaluation of your money
manager and your objectives
enables you to make adjust
ments in response to any
changes at the management
firm or in your own financial
situation.
The use of full-time profes
sional money managers has
been a privilege traditionally
reserved for only the wealthi
est families, corporationsand
institutions. But in today’s
marketplace, manyindividual
investorsareenjoyingtheben
efitsof full-time portfolioman
agement at minimum invest
mentsthat areoften far lower
than those traditionally re
quired. Asaphysicianand an
investor, you should address
the question of how, not
whether, you will participate
in the financial markets. Ul
timately, professional money
management may be able to
save you time, help you earn
more money from your in
vestmentsand, perhapsmost
importantly, offer you thecon
fidence you need to focus on
your medical practice and
your family.
*Past performance is no
guarantee of future results.
