Younger brother of Kareem gets 18 in first game
KANSAS CITY, Mo.

of basketball stars Kareem
and Jaßon Rush scored 18
pointsin hisfirst high school
game Tuesday night, lead
ing Kansas City Westport to
a 61-48 win over Lincoln
Prep.
Brandon Rush, a 6-foot-6
sophomore forward, is at his
third high school and hadn’t
played in a game before this
because of transfer require
ments and grades.
Hecame offthebench mid
way through the first quar
ter for Westport, now 15-4.
At one point he got a re
bound and took it the length
of the court before scoring
on a two-handed dunk.
“Ididn’t know I was going
to do that,” he said. “It just
happened.”

Rush “looked really good.”
“We just wanted to see how
he'd fit in and he fit in well,”
the coach said. “We knew he
would. The kids were all pull
ing for him to get a chance.”
Kareem and Jaßon Rush
both starred at Pembroke Hill,
aprivate high school that won
Missouri Class 2A state cham
pionships in 1997, 1998 and
1999. Those titles were later
forfeited, along with all games
in which the brothers played,
because of payments they’d
received from their summer
league basketball coach.
Jaßon Rush, the oldest,
would have been a senior at
UCLA this season had he not
left after his sophomore year
todeclare hiseligibility for the
NBA draft. But he was passed
over, and recently signed as a
practice squad player with the
ABA’s Kansas City Knights.
Kareem Rush is a junior at
Missouri and he leads the Ti

Sportswoman of the Year

has been named as a finalist
for the Sportswoman of the
Year by the Georgia Women’s
Intersport Network (GA-WIN).
Leverett attended the Na
tional Girls and Women in
Sports Day Awards Banquet
on February 6 in Decatur,
Georgia where the winners
wereannounced. Thereare 10
categories in which females
werenominated, ranging from
coaches to officials. This
year’sbanquet theme was “Cel
ebrating 30 Years of Title IX.”
The senior shortstop from
Appling, Ga. was named the
ASU Female Athlete of the
Year in 2001. She was also a
member of the Peach Belt All-
Tournament and All-Confer
