Georgia parents urged to use “love seats”
Gov. Roy Barnes has pro
claimed February as Child
Passenger Safety Month in
Georgia to remind parents
that all children should be
placed in child safety seats,
booster seats or seat belts
every time they ride in a car
or truck.
“We are asking parents and
caregivers of children weigh
ing 40 to 80 pounds to protect
their children by using what
v'e consider a real love seat,’
that is, a booster seat,” said
Yvonne L. Mcßride, director
of the Governor’s Office of
Highway Safety (GOHS). “It
isespeciallyimportant to know
that a booster seat is needed
once your child has outgrown
his or her safety seat. A
booster seat is needed once
your child has outgrown his
or her safety seat. A booster
seat raises a child up so the
seat belt fits, preventing the
child from being thrown from
the car in a crash.”
- Child Passenger Safety
Month waslaunched with the
announcement of the Boost
America! program in Geor
gia. The Boost America! part
ners— Ford Motor Company,
United Way and the GOHS —
will distribute 25,000 booster
seats to eligible families in
Georgia over the next several
weeks.
- “Motor vehicle crashes are
the leading cause of death for
children in Georgia,” said Lt.
Gov. Mark Taylor. “Injuries
and deaths related to motor
vehicle crashes could be re
duced if every child is prop
erly buckled in a child safety
seat, booster seat or with a
lap/shoulder belt appropriate
for the child’s age, weight and
height.” :
