The Augusta Symphony, un

Portnoy, presents its fourth
Masterworks Concert of the
2001/02 on Saturday, Febru
ary 23, 2002, 8 p.m. at the
Maxwell Performing Arts The
atre at Augusta State Univer
sity. A PreConcert Preview
begins at 7 p.m. with guest
speaker Arthur Ross, violist.
The concert features
Korngold’s “Violin Concerto.”
Alsoincluded in the concert is
John Adams’ “The Chairman
Dances: Foxtrot for Orches
tra,” and Mendelssohn’s “Sym
phony No. 3 (“Scottish.”)

The February 23 concert is
preceded by a PreView of the
concert selections with Ross, a
long-standing member of the
Augusta Symphony. Mr. Ross
graduated from Davidson Fine
Arts School and the Eastman
School of Music (N.Y.) This
PreViewwillbeginat 7p.m. in
the mezzanine of the Perform
ing Arts Theatre, and is open
to the public at no admission.
Born in 1973 in the city of
Zhitomir, Ukraine into a fam
ily of professional musicians,
Vadim Gluzman began study
ing the violin at the age of
seven. In 1991, 17-year-old
Gluzman was granted five min
utes to play for the great Isaac
Stern. Five minutes later, a
wonderful friendship wasborn.

Vadim Gluzman a Pietro
Guarneri violin. Mr. Gluzman
has performed throughout the
United States, Europe, Rus
sia, Japan and Canada, as a
soloist, chamber musician, and
in a duo setting with his wife,
pianist Angela Yoffe. He has
been the winner of numerous
awards, including the presti
gious Henryk Szeryng Foun
dation 1994 Career Award.
Beforemovingto Israelin 1990,
he studied with Zakhar Bron
and later, with Yair Kless at
the Rubin Academy of Music
in Tel-Aviv. In 1996, he be
came the owner of abow from
the Zzeryng collection. He
now plays theoutstanding 1690
Stradivarion extended loanto
him through the Stradivari
Society of Chicago.
The Symphony’s Master

The Partridge Inn revives legendary ballroom
After years of requests for
special events in their most
magnificent room, now serv
ing as The Dining Room, The
Partridge Inn has acceded to
popular demand and an
nounced plans to revive The
Morris Partridge Ballroom.
Once the setting for the sto
riedteadancesregularly hosted
by Mr. Partridge and hislovely
wife Louise and attended by
“the society folks of the
North,” this wonderful room
has high ceilings, brass chan
deliers, mirrored columns and
glass walls which look out onto
the famous Verandahs of the
landmark hotel. The Partridge
Inn is building a new restau
rant in another area of the
hotel so that The Ballroom
willbeavailable at all times for
parties, receptions and meet
ings.
