Paine’s masked ball, a grand success
AUGUSTA
Paine College hosted the
Second Annual Paine College/
United Negro College Fund
Masked Ball at the Radisson
Riverfront Hotel on February
8. More than 600 people at
tended the gala event. El
egantly dressed guests from
across the nation dined,
danced, and participated in
the festive Parade of Masks.
Internationally renowned
actress Cicely Tyson, actress
Vinie Burrows, Mr. and Mrs.
Frederick Douglass IV, Dr.
David Beckley, president of
Rust College, Dr. Rudolph
King, Bahamian entrepreneur
and International Purple and
White Sponsor, and The Hon
orable Charles W. Walker,
Senate Majority Leader for
the state of Georgia, were
among the dignitaries in at
tendance. Paine College re
ceived over one half million
dollars in special gifts. Dr.
Rudolph King gave Paine Col
lege $300,000 and a full four
year “Cicely Tyson Scholar
ship” for a deserving Paine
College student. Attorney
Tim Mirshak facilitated a
$250,000 endowed scholarship
for the College from Dr. David
Jerram’s estate. The Masked
Ball also generated over
$35,000in corporate sponsor
ships for the Paine College/

Top Ladies announces holiday activities
The Augusta Chapter of
Top Ladies of Distinction,
Inc. (TLOD) had collabo
rated a partnershipoutreach
of community holiday activi
ties.
The Senior Citizens
Thrust and Top Teens spon
sored their annual Sing-A-
Long of Christmas carols
and favorite songs requested
by the residents of Salem
Rehab Center. The Top
Teens presented their spe
cial rendition of “Rudolph
the Red Nosed Reindeer”
with antlers and red noses.
Lady Millicent Mazyck was
the accompanist. TLOD and
Top Teens provided refresh
ments and shared conversa
tions with the residents.
The Senior Citizens
Thrust presented a 27-inch
color television to the Belle
Terrace Senior Center dur
ingtheir Christmas celebra
tion program. The Senior
Citizens Thrust is involved
with many activities pro
vided for seniors at the Cen
ter. A financial contribu
tion was also given to sup
port the “Meals on Wheels”
program.
